I was driving along at 5 mph in heavy rain when suddenly there was a big bang, upon checking I found that the sunroof had shattered.
I have since found that this is a known fault with Honda sunroofs.
Disappointed Gerry.

OMG that must have been so scary!! Did you have the blind closed? I hope so. I am worried about mine now!! I hope you are OK.
July 5, 2024 at 10:12 pm #284096Yes the bang did scare me a little, lucky the blind was closed. Keep the faith….lol
July 5, 2024 at 10:20 pm #284098Lucky the blind was closed!
What has insurance said?
July 5, 2024 at 10:33 pm #284102Yeah it’s a big panoramic roof and we never ever close the blind! But it’s raining heavily now so I just went and closed it lol. Paranoid now! Glad you are OK.
July 6, 2024 at 8:24 am #284115Thus far I havent involved Motability or Direct Line because Honda accept it’s a manufacturing issue. I’m guessing it was the massive downpour that caused my sunroof to shatter ? I really like the ZR-V so this hiccup shan’t put me off the impressive car.
July 6, 2024 at 10:31 am #284124😳 that sounds.. exciting! I do hope it’s not something that breaks when it rains though.
"Come on BYD Seal!"July 6, 2024 at 12:57 pm #284132You really need to contact Motability about this otherwise If Honda refuse to sort it, you could end up with a very hefty bill.
July 6, 2024 at 5:13 pm #284168If the sunroof can shatter during heavy rainfall then what will happen when there is hailstone?
My advice is to get a cling film or better still get a clear tint wrap put on from inside the car. If the sunroof does shatter the wrap should hopefully keep it in place.
July 7, 2024 at 10:49 am #284234I shall inform Motability tomorrow morning just to be on the safe side. Excellent idea to have the sunroof wrapped. I dislike all the light sunroofs pour into the cabin therfore I never use the sunroof….strange eh I honestly hope they supply me with an alternative car without hassle because I think there may be a delay in sourcing the glass panel. My sun worshiping girlfriend got one Hell of a fright but I think she’ll want the blind shut from now on…lol
July 7, 2024 at 11:11 am #284242They will offer you an alternative car while yours has gone in for repairs. Honda/repair shop (depends who repairs the car) should provide you a car that is suitable. If they provide you with a vauxhall Corsa from their pool car and it’s small get in touch with motability who will allocate you a car that is suitable from enterprise hire car or whoever they use nowadays. Always take pictures of the hire car on the day of collection and on the return to capture the condition of bodywork tyres windscreen interior etc in case they claim for a damage that was not there when you returned the car. I happened to me. Check paperwork to make sure all existing damage accounted for.
July 7, 2024 at 11:47 am #284245The problem with putting a wrap on the sunroof, is in the unlikely event it shatters again Honda would likely place the blame on you!
Definately let Motability know tomorrow.
July 7, 2024 at 2:19 pm #284263Just had a quick search but could not find any other zr-v reported with exploding sunroof. As the poster mentioned Honda has issues with exploding sunroof. There is a class suit in America.
It’s a manufacturers defect unless you or they can find any object like a rock that caused it.
July 8, 2024 at 12:24 pm #284312I thought that was for the exploding back windows.
July 8, 2024 at 1:29 pm #284315The nightmare begins i.e. I’ve been forced to have the exploding sunroof fixed through insurance. I told Direct Line that I’m making the claim under protest. I’m in two minds about rejecting the car. The parts guy at Honda said a stone must have hit the sunroof, when I stated that no stone hit the roof….he retorted “must have been a stone”
