Why not start with what you like the look of then factor in practicality/suitability for your disability, then cost/availability, then which you can actually test drive in and which out of those lived up to expectations, once you’ve got through those options it’ll be down to just 2 or 3 and then it’s up to you if you let your heart decide or your wallet.

If that doesn’t help you decide then just strap on a fresh pair of panties and “go for it”!

First thing to do is bottom out what type of car you want. i.e. hatch, saloon, mpv, suv etc.

We always opt for an suv because it ticks the boxes of seat height for accessibility for both of us and boot size for my wife’s walking frame, plus luggage etc. We tend to steer clear of mpv’s as we don’t need that many seats.

We know we’ll want an auto as i’m the driver and my knees are shot.

Given that we’ll have the car for 3 to 5 years we tend to want a very good spec and so save hard to create a pot to cover that. Usually we’ll prefer a leather interior as its easy to slide on and off the seats. I’ve begun to lean towards 4wd as winter getaways in north wales can make it vital in freak snowfalls. I’d ideally want adaptive cruise control in the next car. I also need ample room to spread out too. I’m 6’2″ with long legs and often although a good outer size, and SUV can feel cramped in the cockpit. The outgoing kuga is a good example of that. I’ve also got an interest in the next car having a black headliner due to having light sensitive eyes and so liking the feeling of being in a darker environment when driving. Finally we’ve got to like the styling of the car. 3 to 5 years is a long time and if you’re not keen on the styling of a car from the off then its gonna feel a lot longer. The car should give you a lift when you look at it, and make you want to drive it and enjoy it, and not just see it as a utility.

Whether we’ll find all of those elements in the next car remains to be seen.  But you get the picture on how we pull our requirement together.

Maybe take that kind of approach and see what that leads you to?

The other feature i’ll be interested in considering is hybrid technology. We don’t have a drive at home so wouldn’t want to go full electric as charging would have to be done off site and would just be a pain. But I am keen to see what self charging hybrid options there are that meet as many of our other needs as possible.

i feel your pain i am having the same problem and my current lease doesnt run out till sept next year.

i need to change to something higher but dont need anything particularly large, no passengers and no wheelchair etc so dont need a large boot.

must have an automatic so i have smaller suv’s in mind, so far the list is in no particular order:

              peugeot 2008suv

              nissan juke

              mini countryman

              bmw i3

              mercedes b class

once i decide wether to change asap or wait till sept i will arrange test drives, leaning towards the countryman as local dealer has had £500 cash back offers or £500 off the ap, although the model ive been looking at is 0 ap on wpms.

head room is a little tighter but the seat height is much the same.

i like the exclusive trim and theres a nice cream leather.

on wpms the cooper is 0 ap with the comfort nav pack its £536 with stratstone offering £500 its practically 0 ap too.

i just need a test drive to check that the 1.5 is enough for the bigger body, i have the 1.5 in the 3dr mini at the moment and its good but i just want to make sure it can handle the increase.

if its not then i would go for the 2 litre cooper s its not much more anyway.

                    Hi all

i can relate to this topic given the fact im due to select a vehicle next June (2020)and so far going with the choices available I would happily consider:

                    vw Tiguan r line tech

                    Bmw i3s

mini 5 door Cooper s sport

                    Mini Countryman Cooper s sport

However I really enjoy my current vehicle Vw golf gtd for comfort, economy and drive so would possibly extend my lease??

We have a Countryman Cooper S Exclusive auto on order, coming from a 1.4 Golf Match Estate.

Looking forward to the extra power and excitement, the Golf has been a great car its just so boring and ready for something different.

I was in the same boat as you martino, After months of analysis and going to many test drives I finally made a choice I went for the Volvo XC40, what I can’t stand now is the constant second guessing if I made the wrong choice 🙁

I was really disappointed the xc40’s boot wasn’t bigger. I really fancied one too.

Why can’t motability design an electric scooter roof box with hoist. ??

Dave one of my neighbours who is no disabled and buys privately  has a Toyota Corolla hybrid  estate it is only the 1.8, but claims he gets 60 +mpg without trying, apparently he has had a few over the years, but the new model is more fuel efficient.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
