What to expect when ordering a small fish supper?

I’m on holiday in St Andrews Fife and visited the local chippy for a fish supper. Where I live you get the option of a Fish Supper or a Small Fish Supper. The Fish Supper contains two fish, £9:50 with small containing one, £7:10.

I had a look at the menu and a Fish Supper is £13:50ish but I order a Small Fish Supper as I would do at home £11:75. I couldn’t believe it when the cooked fish arrived and it was one fish cut in half long ways. I looked at the girl and asked if she was joking, I explained what a Small Fish Supper was where I came from and the price of it but she just explained that’s the way they do it.

Absolute ripoff  in my opinion but it might be the same in your knock of  the woods.

      So ripoff or not?

Can’t get cod in breadcrumbs where I am let alone a fish super on the menu. For us to have anything like it would be a small / large fish, portion of chips and sort it yourself or a OAP fish and chips, I’m not eligable for 😛!

And definately not for the those prices you pay – Chips £3.10/£3.85 Cod £7.75 / £9.75 OAP £9.10

However, I can’t help but, think cutting a piece of cod length ways and not width ways, is rather strange to say the least.

You can’t really compare region to region as variables change so much rates, rent, electricity etc plus distance the fish has to travel, whether it’s a premium area full of tourists etc. Even here in a tourist hot spot we have our local chippy in Holt that’s pretty cheap yet go 9 miles up the road to Cromer or Sheringham and the prices go up a lot go to a genuine fish and chip restaurant you can double the price despite our local chippy doing eat in too at no extra charge.

I’m “only” 49 I always order the oap meal deal no ones ever said that’s for pensioners only.

Sounds like you should go to Mathew’s chippy in Grimsby, £3 gets you haddock, chips, mushy peas and it’s supposed to be great too.

Rich It would be an expensive meal if I travelled to Grimsby and not very warm when I got back 😂

I’ve been here in St Andrews many times but it’s the first time I’ve noticed such a jump in prices. As an example I get a Set Meal for 2, to take away, from the local Indian restaurant, last year it was £24 this year it’s £30 for the cheaper option and £33 for the option I would normally get.

I shop at my local Tesco back home but the Tesco here is more expensive on every item I would normally get, so a bit dissapointed in what I’ve found this year.

The place is really busy so they probably don’t need to keep their costs down 😞

I was in Cornwall last week, cod & chips twice with 2 cartons of curry was around £33, we went to the same place at Easter and it was £29. Think things have gone up recently. Or maybe they increases prices this time of year.

Cornwall food shops always put their prices up in April, can’t think why….

Our local chip shop has constantly increased prices with every excuse, it’s now a rare treat as we’ll not get cod & chips for all of us for less than £30.  They have a bunch of locally caught fish, depending upon what was caught and available cheaply enough,  Every Cornish chippy should be doing that considering how many fishing boats there are down here, the only downside is if you actually care what fish you get as this is the common option to sell shark meat as something else especially as we aren’t usually familiar enough with all these different fish.

Years ago a local chippy that basically was operated out of a front room of his home. It was the only place that you could get breaded haddock. Honestly, the haddocks where huge. A full fillet. Cost was by weight.

I am talking 1981  and it cost £3.00 for the massive breaded haddock and chips. More than enough for two hungry people.

Chippys won’t do bread crumbs because it spoils the oil.

I can get haddock in breadcrumbs, but not cod.

If I go back home to visit, There’s no problem getting cod in breadcrumbs.

I do like professional cooked cod in batter, however prefer my fish on the end of a baitcaster and lures…
