What happens if I cancel my order?

I know if you end a lease early there’s a £250 charge but what if the car is still on order and I decided to cancel?

Basically we ordered the new Vauxhall Frontera as it fit our very niche needs, but the delivery estimate has already slipped from August to mid September with the dealership showing me a screenshot of Vauxhalls own site showing a vague 11/2025. We have a family holiday in late August and MOT on current private car (which we have literally outgrown) expires early September and is unlikely to pass incurring repair costs etc. We have only paid the £99 deposit so far to the dealership, but if we decide to cancel and try for something else will we incur the £250 fee? My guess is no since lease hasn’t technically started till car is delivered and accepted (pin and whatnot) but what happens to the £99? Is that dealers choice as to whether we get it back or not? No idea what we are going to do though as all other options we look at seem to incur a lengthy wait. Probably seem naive to all of you but this will be our first car on the scheme so we are still working everything out

You can cancel an order without penalty and, no, you will not incur a £250 charge. That only applies to early terminations once you have the car. Ideally, you wouldn’t have paid the dealer a £99 deposit (that’s not a Motability requirement but dealers are at liberty to ask – although most of us refuse to pay a deposit). The dealer should refund it though. If they play silly buggers, tell them that you had not entered into a contract, or legally binding agreement, with them (that only happens when you enter your PIN as you accept the car) and you are cancelling due to uncertainty over delivery date. If they still say that the £99 is non-refundable, tell them that you will take it up with Motability. The dealer will know that Motability have a ‘fine’ system for dealerships who give poor service and they won’t want to incur that, as it will be more than the £99. Good luck and please report back to let us know how you get on.
