A friend who’s looking at getting an ID3 today was told by his dealer who had the exact spec he wanted in stock, you can’t have this brand new unregistered car because your motability. These new cars are private sales only!

Hes been phoning around other VW dealers but as soon as they hear Motability they’ll call you back and you guessed it no call back after days.

      VW should be ashamed

I know before anyone says that they are there cars so can do what they want but how’s this not discriminatory

Phone VW uk tell them and then pop it on Facebook they say we have no powers show that’s not true.

I would have thought Motability would be interested to know their customers are being treated like that.

Going back to 2012 I ordered a Tiguan and when ordering I was offered one that they were expecting in a couple of days. So it sounds like a rogue dealer.

This looks like it could be discrimination under the disability discrimination act. If you have time you can see what action you can take.

Would someone care to tell me what they could possibly gain? A sale is a sale whether to a motability or private customer.

Greater profit.  A motability sale nets around £500. A private sale much more. However motability makes up over 10% of all sales. IE. Their biggest customer.

My understanding, and please more knowledgeable folk correct me if wrong, is that they basically only get a small fee for handling a motability ‘sale’ whereas there is more margin in normal sales and bonuses and all that lark. So we get treated like second class citizens by some dealers as a result as there is less money in it for them.

Some places are great, others just plain ignore you if they make the assumption (easily done with me and no doubt many others as I either walk with a stick or at times use a wheelchair) that you are motability. :/.

Fwippers swooped in (an aforementioned more knowledgeable person) and answered the question as I was typing, but I will post regardless :).

I was told by BMW that a number of cars are specifically ordered for the finance division, because that is where the majority of profit is made. Motability customers cannot access this stock.

The thing is though dealerships rely on volume as well as profit when times are bad they beg for Motability volume then. Forget when times are good. We had the exact same reaction from a VW dealer back in 1998 so we bought a Seat Vario from Stock and funny but we are in a Seat now never returned for a VW. Our first  Motability car was an Hyundai X2 back in 1992 it was good as you could have them on HP back then so you were treated differently.

It is true that dealers receive a set fee for Motability orders (it’s not £500 – I can’t recall the exact figure but it’s less than half of that). However, Motability sales DO count towards manufacturer, franchise and dealership volume based bonuses, so the dealership can end up making thousands out of your Motability order and the set fee is therefore only part of the story.

I have a BMW X1 on order as a Motability car and managed to get around £800 discount (combination of discount off the AP and optional extras) and you can be sure that the dealership is still making money out of the transaction!

No doubt that’s a great deal but it sounds like a cancelled order. You can’t ‘throw in’ extras on a car that’s already delivered. Dealer probably got your extra £100 plus something else for fixing a deal that had fallen through for whatever reason. Not criticising, I’d have probably signed up likewise if I was in the same spot but was it really such a great deal in the end?

If the original poster on the thread has their friend’s experience spot-on then VW have a case to answer – or, at least, the dealer does. A sale is a sale. If a Motability sale doesn’t have the same benefits to the dealer as a normal sale then the dealer needs to understand the basics of how a marketplace works: selling something is always better than selling nothing. And a Motability customer is far more likely to be repeat trade than many other types of customer.

So – not only is the dealer potentially being discriminatory, they’re also asking to be labelled as stupid.

At the end of the day Motability is nothing more than a lease so that should have no bearing on the sale at all, i would tell them to go park the car round the back  (thats been polite) and move on to a different dealer. i always deal with the JTC600 franchise when i can and have had nothing but excellent service for the last 20 years or so.
