Update on PIP vouchers proposal. It’s dead.

      Taken from Reddit today. https://www.reddit.com/r/BenefitsAdviceUK/comments/1g4937y/update_on_pip_vouchers_proposal_dead_the_labour/

The Labour government will not be responding to the plan to replace PIP with vouchers, Stephen Timms has announced, in what appears to be the death knell for the proposal – at least for now.

Some good news to all that receive PIP.

Timms, minister for disability, was answering a question from Lib Dem MP Wendy Chamberlain who asked whether the DWP “plans to respond to the consultation entitled Modernising support for independent living: the health and disability green paper, which closed on 22 July 2024.”

Timms replied on 14 October:  “We do not intend to publish a response to the previous Government’s consultation. We will be considering our own plans for social security in due course and will fulfil our continued commitment to work with disabled people so that their views and voices are at the heart of all that we do.”

In response to a similar question from independent MP Alex Easton, Timms added that  “ We will be considering our own plans for social security in due course. As we develop proposals, we will consider the potential impacts of reform on disabled people.”

Whilst Labour have already said they would be producing their own proposals for social security, this is the first time they have confirmed that the Tory green paper is effectively dead.

This does not rule out the possibility that Labour could come up with similar ideas in the future, but it makes it much less likely.  It is very improbable that the government would decline to respond to a consultation on PIP vouchers and yet very soon afterwards unveil their own plan to introduce exactly the same thing.

Thanks so much for that Joss. Provides *some* small relief from all their awful, ongoing rhetoric and demonisation of chronically disabled people … for now at least.

I’m one thing with physical disabilities but my poor brother in law who has terrible mental health issues is beyond consoling these days with the non stop rhetoric being dished out and it’s already been a full time job for my sister keeping a watch on him to ensure his safety. The lockdown years were bad enough when he’d flip after being caged in at home and go AWOL and having to get the police helicopter out looking for the poor fella to try and save him from himself so add all this on top now a couple of years later & he just can’t cope.

The whole welfare system and the dangerous, merciless rhetoric from various officials is absolutely disgusting. It sickens me at the damage they do just with cruel words. 😡

If it gets proposed again someone should start a government petition requesting MP’s expenses are paid with vouchers. See how quick they back down.

This is not meant to scare anyone as the below is based only on my own Suspicion and trying to read between the lines

I suspect that certain disabilities may soon be exempt from even being able to claim PIP

I feel an attack just for example on MH claims (possibly just new claims at first) is in the air and

And I suspect the qualifying time for PIP may also be extended and also the qualifying criteria

There may be much more to come  IMO and things may become a little clearer on  Wednesday 30 October

I hope my Suspicions are wrong and its not long to find out if I am or not

@Ele what leads you to “Suspect” these alleged possible changes to PIP?

The government will not review any changes to PIP until 2025. So that puts anything the chancellor had in mind regarding savings for this budget out of reach.

                  As I said I suspect

Strongly suspect and did say it may become a little clearer on  Wednesday 30 October

                  Watch this space its coming

                  2025 is almost here

And as before I hope Im wrong

But suspect reading between the lines

                  Im not

(“There must remain concern that PIP reforms proposed in the last government’s green paper may still go ahead in one shape or form. None of these have yet to be ruled out.

                  “Those proposals included changes to the eligibility criteria for PIP and the PIP assessment that were clearly aimed at large reductions in disability benefit expenditure.}
