Toyota is to start public road trials later this month of a Prius plug-in hybrid equipped with solar panels which could generate enough electricity per day to power the car for 35 miles.

The joint project between the car manufacturer, Sharp and NEDO, has seen a high-efficiency onboard solar battery panel installed on the roof, bonnet, tailgate and other parts of the vehicle.

Another example of how fast things are moving Brydo, a couple of years ago solar panels would have struggled to keep the radio going.

SaintsMan its moving fast the whole solar panel market but i never thought they would ever be used on cars. They reckon solar panel efficiency will reach 30% over the next five years, this, if achieved, will be a game changer.

Just as an aside, while we are trying to go green and save the planet, the Tories have just increased VAT on solar panels and battery storage from 5% to 20%.

So in the last few months they have reduced the grant on BEVs, eliminated it on PHEVs and now this.

VAT on coal however I has been kept at 5%.

I need someone to explain this to me.

Brydo, I don’t think it needs explaining. We are getting screwed all over the place. Everything starts to move into the “environmentally friendly” phase and bam the govt whack us for trying to be green.

I agree Steve but we have a very long way to go before we are at that point. The government collects billions£ from fossil fuel taxes and at some point this lost tax will have to be recovered from somewhere but the green revolution needs encouragement not discouragement.

Looks like the VAT increase was scrapped in 2016, however it’s been added from last month. Looks like the Tories are blaming the EU for the raise. However, another site says that the increase due to be applied in October, will not go ahead as the panels count as energy efficiency and all energy efficiency measures are set at 5%.

I just checked a German website and they are having the same issues, that site is saying that the increase has been lobbied by the power companies who are losing profit to home owners with solar panels. Unlike the UK where solar installations are mainly fitted to South facing roofs, German house owners are getting them fitted to East and west roofs. That way the householder gets the benefit of free electric in the morning and evening when the houses are occupied and people are using electricity but the power companies are losing out as they don’t get as much fed back into the grid, so they want the government to ” fine” home owners for not giving them free electricity.
