Cars that are driving on the roads ( night/darkness) with a headlight or a tailight or a brakelight not working in my area Sheffield is almost at epidemic levels, old cars, newish cars, private hire taxis are these drivers not aware or just plain ignorant, whats wrong with checking all your lights are working at least weekly is not too demanding a job and most newish cars have bulb failure dash warnings.

Is there a shortage of bulbs or have they become too expensive to buy or too hard to replace,i flash every driver i see,i wonder what they think.

I’m maybe mixing up those with auto lights. As I always have them in auto unless I feel lights are needed and have not come on

Again, this is where confusion reigns. When car lights are left on ‘auto’ (as they should), in normal daylight driving conditions the front DRLs are illuminated but there is no illumination whatsoever at the rear. It is only when the sensors determine that headlights are needed that the rear lights illuminate. Some auto headlight sensors don’t react early enough, especially in poor weather conditions, but because the dashboard is always illuminated these days (not just when headlights are on – as used to be the case in the past) drivers have no idea that they have no illumination at the rear and are putting themselves in danger as a result. I am just staggered that this system ever passed safety sign off.

yes but if the sides dash light is on then surely the rears are on too, and its not now in drl mode?

Correct. The tail lights don’t illuminate in DRL mode but do in all others. Auto headlights don’t use side lights. They switch straight to main dipped headlights. Problem is in bad weather many don’t activate as soon as they should.

                Just checked outside..

The XC40 rear side lights are lit when the car is turned on, along with the front DRLs.

Excellent. All other manufacturers should follow Volvos lead.

But there’s still no indication inside the car that the headlights are actually lit when Auto is selected.

There is with Kona. There are 2 dash lights, one is heads.

Strange Volvo haven’t put them in..

I got in my new Tiguan last night to set up a couple of USB-C memory sticks with my music on them and having to have the engine turned on but not running I turn the lights from “auto” to “off” and straight away a third of the drivers info screen was take by a square box with written there in “Please turn on your lights”.

This warning would be very hard to miss while driving.

The answer to that question is quite an easy one, to replace a headlamp bulb on many modern cars can be a front bumper off and headlamp removed, this is well beyond the scope of the average driver ….and if a main dealer job it will cost a few hours labour…people won’t spend the money !

if there ever was a bulb shortage they could just remove the indicator bulbs from bmw drivers cars they wouldnt miss them as they dont seem to know they are there to be used!

On the majority of modern cars the headlight bulb can be changed by removing the wheel and either remove the splashguard or at least the front part, put your hand through and change the bulb. Job done!

As opposed to just lifting the bonnet.. progress.
