i am finding i read and watch less and less news as they seem to have forgotten the golden rule of checking their facts first.

loads of reports from nhs staff bemoaning a lack of ppe yet so far i cant find a single verified report of a trust running out completely. a report quoting a nurse turned out she was a corbyn labour activist who had given away ppe to volunteers the day before and her trust received a load of ppe the day before she posted her heart rending plea that there was no ppe.

yet not a single news outlet that used her story gave her background or bothered to ask the trust if it had ppe.and none of them have corrected the story. even the bbc ran with a story that a trust head had asked them for barbour/burberrys phone number, turned out he was nothing to do with the nhs. at least they put out a correction half the size.

it seems putting a story out first is more important than checking its true first.

      rant over.

Here we have a group of people 3D printing parts for the visors, they’re using special plastics that can go through the autoclave & are resistant to disinfection with nasties like hydrogen peroxide & they are built to an approved pattern where a simple sheet of acetate with holes punched in it simply clips to the frame and the acetate can be washed etc but simply replaced too.

So, the NHS simply bin them after a single use & come asking for another 500 the next day.

I can only speak from personal experience.  My sister-in-law is a Senior Maternity Nurse and she’s having to make Masks for herself and the other Nurses she works with during her ‘time off’ (from working 16 hour shifts 6 days a week).  These are not PPE grade, of course, just ‘regular’.  They’ve been full approved by the Hospital for the use they’re intended for.

Apparently having to wear the elastic loops around the ears all day makes the back of the ears really sore, so she’s designed a way for the masks to be worn attached to a cloth headband via big buttons at the back of the band.  Then the elastic is looped around these buttons instead of behind the ears. (Again I stress this is NOT for anyone who works with Covid 19 cases, or in ICU or NICU, or anywhere that must be ultra ‘sterile’).  They’ve been designed to be easily washable at a high temperature without the elastic stretching.  (Don’t ask me how – I’m no seamstress!)

As they’re at home at the moment anyway her two daughters are helping her.  The older one (12) is handy with the sewing machine while the younger one (10) sews on the buttons.  (They’re also getting as full and Education as is possible at the moment.  Daddy makes sure of that because he’s furloughed at home.)

This is as well as also caring for their 4 year old son of 4 their 2 year old son who has Downs Syndrome and a compromised immune system.

                  That family is ORGANISED.

ive seen several groups that produce those headbands georgie its a cracking idea in the past ive had to wear those masks with the elastic ear thingys and they are literally a pain after an hour or so.

i would never have thought of it but its so simple and must be a great releif for those that have to wear the masks all day.

in away the surgical ones are more comfortable as they tie around the back of the head as they need to be tighter and the ppe3 masks are worse as they have to be a tight seal so murder your nose and under your chin.

we used to do decontamination drills that would last several hours your face was in bits at the end.in a way it was better doing hazmat in that you were in a total suit rather than masks.but boy are they hot and uncomfortable.

When quoting sources, like YouGov it should also be mentioned that YouGov is a business founded by a Conservative candidate (Stephan Kukowski) and a current member of the Conservative government (Nadhim Zahawi), it is possible to slant a survey by asking pointed questions/multiple answer choices.

When reading opinions always take into account the background of the publisher if taking them seriously.

Having worked in a factory, the idea of 3d printing comes across as a cottage industry, but that is the UK, 40 years ago it was common knowledge milling injection moulding dies so one machine could manufacture 1000s an hour, but since the ’80s we outsourced everything to the point where we have outsourced survey businesses telling us what to think and the idea of actually making something ourselves is a miracle!
