I personally don’t have a X1 but my wife does and I drive it from time to time. I have also had the latest X1 as a courtesy car for 3 days.

My view is that it’s a great car especially the x drive 4×4 versions which handle like a sports car. A lot of people have said that they find the ride harsh but I have never thought this.

The seats feel comfortable to me and my wife says that she’s never felt uncomfortable even after long journeys.

The 2.0l petrol engine is a lovely unit but a tad thirsty with the X1 being a heavy car and the auto gearbox is the best I have ever experienced.

A new model is due to be released in 2021 and this should address the issues of it being a bit old fashioned especially the interior.

        I would definitely recommend it.

Thankyou that’s interesting to hear, I do worry about the seats and if it’s a harsh/smooth ride so that’s good to know. I tend to stick to journeys maximum 20 mins before stopping so would the mpg be better petrol for that? Iv only done 2 long trips (with a lot of stops) twice in the last 5 years.

I test drove a 2 litre manual diesel back in November so I’m not sure if that will be much different from the 1.5 petrol manual however the trim was identical. I haven’t had a petrol for many years so this will be a change, The ride itself felt pretty smooth which is very much needed.

I had a quick look at the X2 joss and came back to the X1.

Elliot is there any projected times for the 2021 model? Mine should hopefully be ready for collection at the end of April.

The issue to me is that everything is extra on BMWs, so there are many other cars on the scheme that have much more in the specs without the BMW badge

tiguan, Kodiaq, Tarraco to name  three, plus Kia and Hyundai models

Southamman that’s one thing that was quite off putting when I first started my search, and they are not cheap either. You would think with there price tags that they would include a few things as standard..maybe they will do that in the new 2022 model.

I have a BMW 3 series on the scheme and it’s far better equipped than any VW out there as standard. The new Tiguan has lost many of its previous features.

The new BMW X1 is due in 2022 not in 2021 as I previously stated.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Southhamman, thats not quite true, I have a BMW, grand coupe msport, and its extremely well equipped as standard, with up to date tech. My previous X1 was also well equipped, but a bit dated in tech.</p>

The 3 series has quite lower seating compared to the X1, I’m not sure what the msport includes but I haven’t got that with my model. I am happy with what I have ordered…I was very much in 2 minds between the X1 and q3 for a while.

Lou, I had a Q3, before the X1, loved that car, and seeing the new Q3 in the showroom, if it was on the scheme at the time, I would probably have ordered it.

lord muc, I had one about 5 years ago and must admit I loved it. The seat height was good, the ride was smooth and I felt very safe but the back from my memory is more compact/smaller than the X1 am I right in thinking so? It seems to be better equipped (as standard) than the X1 aswell which is why Iv been very much in 2 minds.

My sister had one which I drove extensively. I found the ride harsh, especially comparing it to its rivals.

It definitely handles better than it rivals though, the tech is old BMW but is still good if you get Pro Nav and most importantly it has buttons unlike all this touch screen stuff.

space is good for a small family, you sit fairly low so it’s more car like and not suv which I personally wasn’t a fan of.

overall if you don’t mind a stiff ride then it’s a very good car

We have had an X1 for 4 years now.. its a 1.8 s drive (148BHP) spec is a bit dated now, drives very well and is economical on longish journeys. for your type of running petrol would be better. We can get over 50 on long trips but since Covid our journeys are in the 20 to 50 mile range and we are down to low to mid 40s. Seats are hardish but not too uncomfortable for me. Suspension is quite hard and there is a lot of tire noise. Silly seat belt top mount which  means that small drivers/ passengers are strangled by the belt. We were thinking of  replacing with a new one before Brexit but in the end went for a Q3.

That’l be the spec that Iv gone for and I’m only little at 5ft 4 would that prove problematic with the seatbelt? I felt ok on the test drive but it was only 15 mins. The Q3 didn’t seem as economical compared to the X1 could I be wrong? How does the Q3 vouch for size incl the boot? Donkey Oatie your reply has been most helpful.

Lou, my x1 was an msport, the most immediate difference from the Q3, for me, was the tyre roar, it was like the windows were open, I was ok with the ride. But any longish journey, was awful, as speed increased, so did the noise, a change of tyres only made it worse, you literally could not hear the radio, the car was a total let down in that respect, the last tyre change made it a bit quieter, but I lost the love for it, otherwise it was a very fast, capable and solid car, its not a head turner, in the way, my poverty spec Q3 was. The newer X1 may be a lot better in that respect, but the tech is ancient and can’t be upgraded, compared to the Grand coupe and others. I was happy to get rid my mine.

A few mixed opinions on the two then, I think I might sit on it for a while as I haven’t much choice with restrictions anyway and then re consider with some further test drives. I just worry the seat height on a Q3 will be remarkably lower and the car have not as much cabin space. The tech does look good on the q3.

Lou, enjoy a leisurely test drive, try and get one, where they let you take the car out without a salesman, some want to sit in the back, like an unwanted passenger, others want to follow you in another car!!!  dealers are open to book, get on you tube and go down the rabbit hole of Video reviews. Most important, have fun.

Oh I thought they had shut again with the restrictions being tightened il sort some test drives out if that’s not the case. Are they able to bring a test car to me as I remember bmw mentioning it? The YouTube reviews have been my evening programme these past few weeks

Lou, if you are in tier 4, The prime minister announced that car dealers in the new Tier 4 must close their showrooms from midnight tonight (Dec 19) and return to click-and-collect only.

The situation will probably go country wide soon, so plenty of time to gorge on the you tube, which is what I did. Driving lessons and tests are also forbiddden
