The growth in demand for SUVs across Europe has slowed for the first time in six years as smaller, electrified models start to claw back sales.

Between January 2016 and January 2020, the market share of SUVs grew significantly – from 25% to 40%.

For the majority of the year, the market share of SUVs remained stable – between 40% to 41%. However, their registrations fell by 13% in November, and 21% YTD when compared to 2019.

Yes! Even though my Motability car list consists of crossovers, I’m getting tired of seeing these every time I go out.

On the other hand, I’m quite surprised to see the Toyota Yaris outselling the Renault Clio by a few hundred units.

        Motability cars:

2015 RR Evoque AWD 2.0 TD4 SE Tech - written off
2017 Toyota CH-R 1.2T Dynamic CVT AWD - written off
        2019 BMW X2 2.0L Sport
        2023 Nissan Qashqai e-Power N-Connecta

I knew that SUV’s had increased massively in popularity in recent years and having had them for many years I can see why, but I had no idea that they were up to 40% market share. I don’t think that you can conclude anything from any figures relating to 2020 though. The motor industry has been so heavily disrupted, more so than most industries, that the figures are all over the place. Also, Electric SUV’s are a bit behind electric cars in the development curve, so any distortion from that will no doubt level out over the coming years.

Not that surprising they are slowing now – same with most things – they get popular and then everyone that wants one get one and they sales don’t continue to increase as much.
