      First post long time follower.

Our two year old VW Touran has just had its service and has been recomended that the front tyres be chsnged due to 3mm tread depth (this is there recommend depth for change).

Is this sufficent reason to book it in with quickfit or do they have there own guidelines? This is my first motability car so am unsure how it works..

Go to Kwikfit let them measure but I think it has to be less than 2mm for a change.

          Hi,

Think  small car is correct. Wouldn’t change mine at 3 mm. fortunately it was summer. Called kwikfit mobile at @2mm and changed them. Primacy 4 s vs original primacy 3. Subjectively a little quieter. Touran SEL 17 inch 215/55 gives excellent ride.  Kwikfit mobile excellent service.

Ps. Mine was 2 years old and had the same advice at service. Perhaps the mobile guy didn’t want a wasted visit so was more flexible than my visits to their premises. Tyres were low grip at 3 mm

In my experience, Kwik Fit will change tyres at 2-3mm tread. Not sure what measurements they actually report up to Motability though.

                Thanks all for advice.

Not to worried just yet it was just Easter is fast approaching and due a family holiday down to Devon (300 mile each way) which would involve a lot more driving and at greater speed then the usual town driving. So safety first and all that.

Kwak Fat wouldn’t change mine until they got to 2mm despite the fact I couldn’t get out of their car park in the bad weather with them at 2.5mm they had virtually no grip at all, the manager came out and instead of admitting the problem and changing the tyres he got 4 of his staff to push me to the exit!

I buy my own “All Season” tyres now.

This is from the Motability site:

“Legally, tyres need to be replaced when the tread depth falls to 1.6mm on 75% of the contact surface. However Kwik Fit will replace tyres on Motability cars when the depth falls to 2.0mm.”

                      https://www.motability.co.uk/your-lease/tyres/#tab=tab-3&

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

It  is may be interesting to know it is against Kwikfit’s interest to change tyres early – it costs them money. As I understand it, Kwikfit are paid a fixed sum per car to look after its tyres.  It does not charge back to Motability the costs it incurs during the contract period. In many cases it never has to do anything in three years and keeps all of its fixed sum payment as profit.

I always go straight for the free coffee, it’s the only decent thing in the place.

Last time I was there the guy didn’t even acknowledge that I existed so I shuffled over to the coffee machine, grabbed a cappo and sat down, after about 15 minutes he decided I’d been ignored for long enough and asked what I needed, I finished the last of my coffee and got up and just walked past him and out the door.

That was the last time I’ll have anything to do with those plebs, I now buy my tyres at a local garage who are brilliant.

not till they under 2mm. most tyres now have tyre tread depth indicator blocks.

Once the tread gets to the same level they need changing.
