Query on insurance

I’m miving from a privately owned car to a motability car and I am wondering what happens to my no claims discount. As insurance is provided through the scheme, does this mean that your NCD doesn’t continue to build up while you are on the scheme?

This wouldn’t really matter in my case as I already have maximum NCD, but I think some insurance companies won’t recognise previous NCD discounts if you haven’t used them on a policy for a number of years. Does that mean that if I later moved back from a motability car to a privately owned vehicle, I’d effectively have to start building up by NCD from scratch again?

if anybody can clarify, that would be great. Many thanks.

On most private car insurance policies you will loose your no claims bonus record if you are not the policyholder after 2 years

On motability whilst you cannot build up no claims bonus some insurers will see and treat your claim history record with mobility as no claims bonus , if you was to come off the scheme

Just to add to what myself33 said if you leave Motability sometime in the future they will give a note that covers you for 5 year (maximum) NCB as long as you haven’t made any claims.

I’ve had to do this myself in the past and most, but maybe not all, will except that note for the 5 years no claim should you want to insure a private car when you leave.

When I spoke to RSA they told me there claim history letter will show the actual full amount of years that you have not had a claim with them, when I asked about mine earlier this to year, I was told currently 8 years

              Thanks all.

If I get another family member to add me to their private policy, would that maintain my NCD? Just that it’s over 1” years so don’t particularly want to lose it just by being “inactive”.

                10 years, not 1!

As far as I know you can only increase/maintain NCD as the policy holder, not as a named driver

I’ve had a quick look for the letter but its buried somewhere but I’m 90% sure its 5 years NCB unless its changed since 2017.

The letter is not even a NCB letter it is in fact a “Good driver” letter that’s recognised by insurers as 5 years NCB and AFAIK is why not all insurers except it but could be wrong unless something has change or perhaps some insurers take your word it worth more than 5 years but wouldn’t think so.

Although I have that letter here somewhere I have published it on this very forum with my personal information removed in the passed 5 or 6 years so possible for it to be dug up.

You need to be the policy holder to maintain insurance.

We have a second car so we just alternate policy holder each year to maintain NC for me and my wife.
