XSo I can’t get a home charger installed. I’ll be relying on public chargers. A lot of these chargers are at business’s like restaurants and supermarkets. Do I have to be a customer to use these chargers?
If I’m running low and I find myself needing to charge and the only one local is at a restaurant, do I need to eat in to be able to use the charger?
X

Legally I don’t know, but morally I’d say no. If I was a restaurant owner who had paid for a charger to entice customers with EV’s, I’d be pretty hacked off if someone who wasn’t a customer pulled up and plugged in and used my electricity. Bit of a cheek really. Personally, I wouldn’t touch an EV without the ability to charge at home (which thankfully we have) as we don’t go to supermarkets etc and a refuel at a petrol station that takes less than 5 mins every 3 weeks or so is enough for me and I just couldn’t be putting up with even 20 minute stops for an 80% charge, but if I was in that situation I guess a supermarket is the best option as it’s not so obvious that you aren’t a customer and at least it’s somewhere to kill the time whilst the thing charges!

XYeh the only problem being is that the supermarket chargers are generally the slowest chargers

With respect, you can’t have it all ways. If you want the cheap running costs you have to be prepared to make the sacrifice with your time. Why should a hard working business owner subsidise the motoring costs of members of the public? Put it another way, if you had a driveway with a charger, would you be happy if a random member of public parked their cars on your drive and charged their car at your expense? It’s no different from what you are proposing!

XWith respect, I wasn’t proposing. I was merely asking.

JamesNew chargers are coming all the time, we’ve probably doubled local chargers in the last year and now the local council’s are charging to use them is better because they’re always available.
Do your own research on availability

IanThere is a scheme which people rent their private chargers out.
All app based and I’ve registered my charger no one has used it yet tho. Booking and payment is through the app. No idea how it monitors tho

You have to conform to the parking regulations in force at businesses. Many have time restrictions, just make sure that you don’t get a parking ticket for overstaying.

February 8, 2022 at 10:26 am #176596no harm sticking it on a supermarket as long as you use the shop. coffee shop ones will be best ones i guess. an hrs free charge will likely give you 20+ miles free while you get a nice rest, coffee and cake etc, or even a meal. Or just do your shopping. Just using it without using shop is if nothing else morally wrong.

I seem to recall you were hoping to meet your new partner at a charging point? That might help kill the time and save you spending??

CapuchinJust be aware, lawyers are more expensive than both charging and eating out.
