Only done 540 miles in my new Sportage and that’s the dreaded ppf warning on telling me to keep driving to clear.

Same here,24 plate Hyundai Tuscon N line S manual petrol

my GPF light came on @ 281 miles yes 281 miles, phoned dealer and said bring it in for diagnostics for a regen, earliest is the middle of August, which is still a while off,we’re getting white smoke and only 18 mpg, asked garage what if something goes wrong before car comes in,he said you’ve got breakdown cover,we do 4 miles a day and been told these cars are not good for doing low miles and stop start.Dont bother with going on the motorway to clear it,just book it into dealer..

Its been a common problem with both the Tucson/Sportage, as they share the same engine ever since the new models were introduced.

Both Hyundai/Kia are aware of the situation and tried a couple of fixes that I know of, yet dealers are quick to blame the customers driving style, so its worth keeping this in mind!

To regen it and clear the warning light reuires, the engine up to temperature in 3rd gear at about 3,000rpm and constant speeding up and de-acceleration. Be warned, it takes about 75 miles to clear it, from what I have found and I do frequent long journeys in my Tuscon Ultimate.

Other advice, is to do a web search of Hundai Tucson PPF issues or Kia Sportage PPF issues, where you find forums full of complaints!

No way am I going on motorways doing loads of miles and using petrol to sort this problem out ,with doing very low mileage this light will keep coming up.When car goes in for regen in August I no it’ll be back on shortly afterwards,so when light comes on for 2rd time ,I’ll tell them it’s not fit for purpose and change car and model…

I can’t remember who but, someone has fairly recently done that and didn’t have a problem.

FWIW its best done on A roads.

We had exactly the same problem with our Tucson Ultimate. Only had it since November . 3 regens later and plummeting mpg and I’d had enough.

I got in touch with Motability and they were very understanding.

Expecting delivery of a mid spec Renault Austral by July.

I’ve been in touch with mobility too give them a heads up with the problems on the car,I’ll let dealer do the regen but I no it’ll definitely come back on especially the low miles we do,the exhaust will never warm up in a million years. Its a lovely looking car  and has all the toys we wanted.

This is a big problem especially for Hyundai and Kia,if it doesn’t get sorted soon they’ll lose a lot of sales..

                        Well said Tom65.

We have a Sportage since last May and have covered 2000 miles. The PPF light is now on for the 2nd time. The first time it took a 130 mile motorway trip to clear it. Like you I am not prepared to do that. Like you I will be going back to MB and telling them this car is not fit for purpose i.e. low mileage and stop start conditions. We will be looking for an early termination and change to hybrid or EV.

Surely if enough of us take this approach then MB and/or Kia/Hyundai will take action?

23k in my premium manual and not had the issue… Do both local runs and longer runs… Use engine breaking approaching roundabouts and on the many downhills we have in South Wales.

Asked about the fabled software “fix” in the dealers at 1st and 2nd service and they just looked blank. Any new car would I assume have had that anyway.

Ateca was costing £30 pm…….Tuscon £110 pm, Hmmmmm somethings not right

I’m having the same issue with Mother’s QQ Hybrid, however, it does regenerate automatically whilst I’m on the move. This usually occurs every 3 weeks.

my 5th with the PPF light, the other 4 times I had taken it to the dealership to regen however the latest one I just ignored because at that point had enough. The PPF light now flashes and tells me I have an Exhaust Problem.

I called up motability for an early termination and they have agreed. Shame because it was such a lovely car and was perfect for my needs.

I don’t know if Kia have solved this problem with the PPF,  all I can add to this is that I’ve had my sportage GT Line S Hev  since November 22.  I’ve done 6000 miles of mainly short distance and the car has not missed a beat,  no sign of a ppf  problem yet fingers crossed and overall I’m very pleased with the car.

Tbh if you’re averaging such low mileage maybe look at an electric car unless home charging isn’t possible as even with a 3 pin plug overnight you’ll easily add 4/5 days worth of charge

I’ve read only positive things about gts hev sportage ,but now reading about problems with it ,surely kia have sussed out all these issues on 2025 model that’s being delivered now on 2024 orders.

I’ve had my 74 plate Sportage GT Line 1.6 petrol since the 16th of September, roughly 6 to 7 weeks. I do low miles also. It’s mainly used for taking my son to college, school runs, work and back etc… The other week I recently got that PPF warning and it’s only done just over 800 miles since I got it. Surely the PPF can’t clog up that quick considering the car is brand new? I’ve contacted Kia and they were going to book me in for a forced regen. I have obviously done my research on how to clear it myself. Fortunately I needed to do a big run the other day and I was driving for over an hour at high speeds. The issue still persists. I’m thinking if Kia do the forced regen, it’s only going to happen again after a 1000 miles or so. I can’t be having that at all. I thought the point of a motability car was to have a new reliable car. My previous car was a Zafira 2005 plate. I paid £900 for it and had it for 9 years. It was 19 years old when I got this new car. It had been a workhorse and hadn’t cost me that much to maintain in the time I had it. I’m thinking I made a mistake now.

This is how I feel at the moment. I love the car but I’m not going to change my driving style to suit the cars needs. I roughly do 6000 to 7000 a year, usually small trips doing school runs, work and back etc… I really feel if I take it for a regen, it’s going to happen again. I’ve researched what a regen does and it kinda pointless from an,environmental perspective. They are basically thrashing the engine wasting fuel and polluting more. When I get the regen done and if it happens again, I may consider terminating the lease too and find an alternative. Never expected this with a brand new car.  I even told the sales rep I don’t drive far. They must know the potential problems these cars have.

I don’t know how thrashing the engine is going to re-generate the ppf? That’s how you do it with a Diesel not a petrol.

As a Tucson 1.6 manual owner I haven’t had the light come on in just under 30k miles.. It’s a great car.

You need to get to use lift off “engine breaking” with no fuel going through the engine it to “blow” the filter out. I select a lower gear going downhill and use engine breaking into roundabouts or motorway junctions.. Never had to do the 4th gear to 70 then lift off and repeat method that is normal when this happens.

I have adapted my driving style to meet the current demands of the latest cars.. I don’t want to but needs must.

Deceleration increases the amount of oxygen following through the engine and exhaust system. This raises the temperature of the PPF to a high temperature, which ignites and burns off the soot.

The procedure is opposite to clearing a diesel DPF where you maintain >3000rpm in a low gear at steady continuous speed.
