Paying a deposit

Thought I will call it out in a separate threat as it looks that now and again people pay deposits on their Motability orders. Motability’s stance on this quite confusing, to be honest – on their webpage they claim:

Sometimes your dealer might ask you to pay this when you’re ordering. It will usually be deducted from your Advance Payment when you get your new vehicle. Some dealers might ask for a deposit on cars without an Advance Payment too. Speak to your dealer to find out when they’ll repay this.

But same time they discourage the dealers to take the deposits in their internal communications and we as a customer, can refuse to pay.

If you already paid the deposit, as a customer, your are not obliged to complete the lease until you sign the final agreement and collect the car. If an order is cancelled before this, any Advance Payment paid must be fully refunded.

This would also align with The Consumer Rights Act 2015

In short – a dealer may request a deposit, but you can refuse to pay and walk to another one.

It’s fine saying you can go elsewhere if the dealership insists on having a deposit.  Way down here in Cornwall, if I wanted Hyundai, KIA, MG, Peugeot, Nissan Vauxhall, Cupra, Renault, Skoda, VW or Volvo, you’ve the grand choice of one dealership within 90 miles.   That means it’s take it or spend a fortune in travel.

I was told it was a £1,000 deposit, no question, no choice.  It’s fully understandable when they’re ordering £55k worth of car when they’re not selling big numbers of that particular spec.

In 2009 I travelled all the way from Berkshire to Hull to collect my shiny brand new Volvo CX-90 auto diesel for £26,000.

And I was ready to travel to Derby last week to collect that Skoda Enyaq,  but it didn’t work out.

Despite many telling you must travel twice to the dealership, we live in 21 century,  so my last two cars on Motability I purchased via Internet,  legally signing the documents,  using Digisign. So one trip to save money?

Obviously you may have different circumstances or simply don’t want to travel long distances- totally understandable.
