Hi all I’m a thick northern bloke who knows nothing about the electric car game, Im lead to believe  you get cheap over night rates from my energy supplier(octopus). How much cheaper to charge and run a electric car than a fill and run  diesel car? As I’m very tempted to order the Skoda enyaq sportline 80x which will hopefully be cheaper to run than our diesel.would be 99% of the time charging from home.any feed back would be much appreciated ?

Octopus Intelligent is 7.5p per kWh from memory.

        0.075 x 77kWh =£5.775  (100% charge)

Although you only charge 20- 80% most of the time. You can also work out the cars effeciency per 100 miles but you would need to ask those with an Enyak what there effeciency they are getting 🙂

As above, with Octopus Intelligent you get 6hrs at the 7.5p kWh rate (23:30 – 06:30) but many have reported still getting that rate well after the 06:30 cut off point.

Even at normal rate (27p kWh) it’s considerably cheaper per mile than petrol/diesel and around 1/2 the price of using local chargers (40 – 59p kWh) or high speed chargers (75-99p kWh).

For me a charge from say 20% to 80% once a week or less would be £4.50 and cover my usual weekly mileage. At say 120 miles a week my current Ateca @ 35mpg would use just over 3 gal (14L) of petrol at about £21.50.  On mainly short journeys, local shops etc. it’s even cheaper as there’s no way I get 35mpg on those.

Charging is usually from wherever you end up to 80% “to save the battery”, however with the extra capacity both above and below the allowable capacity – The Enyaq has 80kWh but you see 77kWh, those 3 are buffers at each end – there’s no reason not to charge it fully as long as you don’t do so and leave if fully charged for a long period of time.  Even then, it’ll have to be quite a regular occurrence to have a notable impact.

To answer the original question.  IF you charge for those cheapest 6 hours or so and those 6 hours add  60-70% then your costs per charge would be (7.5p x 50kWh)= £3.75 and that would get you around 150 miles which means a price per mile of about 2.5p. If you do the same maths for your diesel, cost to fill up /miles until you next fill up (range) I’d be amazed if that was under 10p per mile.  It’s a harder calculation as cost is per litre and everything else is per gallon, so you have to convert cost to gallons, then multiply by your mpg OR just divide total cost by expected range.  So if your car does 500 miles and costs £100 to fill up you’re at 20p per mile.

Is there a reason for the 80x?  The facebook groups all seem convinced that the grip and handling are no better than a 80, so unless you need the extra towing capacity, I’d save a few pounds.

I’m off to my dealer tomorrow about the £1100 price drop on the SportLine Plus 80x I ordered.  As you say from what I can see online there doesn’t seem much difference in snow performance with the x version so I may ask if I can just fully cancel and re-order the 80, that’ll be £1500 cheaper than my current order.

Being a 3 year lease why not charge to 100% can’t see batteries degrading over that period.

                        Entirely up to you 🙂

I’ll charge to 100% when I do my almost monthly round trip of 140ish miles in bleak Northumberland, not the place you want to run out of battery!  It’ll be heaters, heated seats and steering wheel on!, we can get snow in May up there!.

Those thinking of going over to OI night tarriff need to do their sums first

I personally dont think I would benefit

Although the OI overnight rate is low the day rate is 3p pkw dearer than say BG

I only need to recharge a total of 9hrs every 20 days at the moment but expect that may well be a little more often in winter

Tend to use the car less in the winter so may well remain about the same

So it seems that anyone that has a 3/4 bed home and low EV mileage maybe better off staying put

I remain open minded on the matter and may well change over to IO

once its benefical for me to do so

                            Thoughts?

Just checked on BG, for me elec is 2.9p more, EV rate is 2p more and only 5 hours not 6.  Gas is 0.6p more.
