Hi there,
haven’t posted much on here recently been trying just to stay safe and hope everyone is keeping well.
Anyway have seen that the New MINI Countryman has been added ( New lights and a digital dash ) and in doing so they have reduced the power output of the Cooper S variants from 192bhp down to 176bhp.
As the higher output was one of the main reasons for our choosing the Cooper S which we got at the beginning of the year genuinely curious as to why they have dropped it down.
Coupled with the extra £500 they have added to the AP’s it does put me off in future.
Any Ideas

I wonder if they’re trying to put a greater distance between the power output of the S and the PHEV so it might push more people towards the PHEV?

GordonI was thinking of the Countryman cooper S but the lower power output and the £500 price hike has put me off. Its the only model in the range that would suit my requirements in terms of space and getting in and out.
July 27, 2020 at 3:19 pm #120478Well impressed with ours and got half price AP at the time so even better, just find it really strange to make a car worse when relaunching it, is very strange .
Wonder if BMW are reducing their cars with the same engine?
July 27, 2020 at 3:45 pm #120480This seems to be the trend now, I did read the new golf has reduced bhp in its 1.5 petrol to 130 from 150bhp in most of its variants.
July 27, 2020 at 4:25 pm #120484I love the Mini Countryman, and I’m glad to see it back on the scheme in greater numbers. The new features make it a really desirable motor even in base spec. It’s very strange how they’ve reduced the bhp of the Cooper S, all other variants seem to be the same. DBTruth, your explanation sounds the most credible.
The Mini made my shortlist, along with Mercedes GLA and Volvo XC40. The Merc is obviously awaiting return to the scheme, but I think it’ll be prohibitively expensive when it does, and the Mini has been crossed off despite its return because you can’t specify lumbar support at all. Not even as an extra or part of a pack apparently. I believe it used to be part of an electric seats pack, but the new model doesn’t allow it at all. Strange how such a highly specified car doesn’t have such a basic feature, especially since the beemers do offer it as an extra. So, it’s Volvo for me. Good job it’s such an awesome little motor ?.July 27, 2020 at 4:28 pm #120485
our “exclusive” model has manual adjustment fitted to both front leather seats and if you spec Exclusive Seats the brochure shows they are still fitted..July 27, 2020 at 4:57 pm #120490It bugs me, manufacturers add senseless crud like mood lights and puddle lights , charging pad etc on base models to try and make them special, if they stuck to improving the basic ergonomics, including adjustable lumbar (on both seats) instead, I’m sure they’d sell more.
Also, you’d think that if they opted for one really good adjustable seat across the model line up, then they’d surely benefit from economy of scale? The higher specs/options could just be for leather and heated and memory etc.
July 27, 2020 at 4:59 pm #120491Thanks Noel,
Thats really helpful! Although it gives me a dilemma now ?. Can you get that spec in a Cooper S All4?
July 27, 2020 at 5:00 pm #120492BTW, you should probably tell Mini chat that info, seeing as they were the ones telling me it wasn’t available!
July 27, 2020 at 5:01 pm #120493The motability page says you can, but the mini configuration page won’t let it combine those specs. Thanks!
July 27, 2020 at 5:04 pm #120494This is the exclusive version of that which will come with Leather Lumbar Seats…I dont think the mini configurator has been fully updated yet, but cant see why you couldn’t order that model as the pricelist has it listed.
July 27, 2020 at 5:11 pm #120498Reducing the BHP really is a backwards step for the Cooper S. I wonder if it’s emissions related.
July 27, 2020 at 5:11 pm #120499Nice Noel, thanks very much. I’ve just had another go at the configuration tool and it is letting me do it. I must’ve been doing something wrong. Thanks for the correction though.
July 27, 2020 at 5:19 pm #120502i can reccomend the cooper s auto exclusive with satelite grey interior, totally copied from someone else lol.
like noel i got it for the reduced ap in pre covid times and stratstones £500 off the ap. so it cost me nothing with the gcb to go up to the comf/nav+ pack.

July 27, 2020 at 7:41 pm #120523I’ve just been reading about the drop in power and it is indeed due to emissions.
July 27, 2020 at 8:02 pm #120525
Matt BIt’s a wild guess but the reduction in BHP could be for the entire mini car brand to meet EU regs regarding emissions due in 2021. Check out you tube video posted on the “New Laws to Make Cars Boring” thread for a detailed explanation. However, I could be totally wrong ?
July 27, 2020 at 8:40 pm #120529It’s funny as the very first Mini Cooper s was 168bhp, I don’t think it will make that big a difference in everyday driving and you won’t see a dramatic change in mpg either.
July 28, 2020 at 9:40 am #120554
NoelThat 168bhp was from a 1.6 engine though, and the in mark 1 countryman that was a lot smaller and lighter, downgrading a 2.0 turbo that can pump out over 300 in John Cooper works spec, just seems wrong to any petrol heads out there, but granted a drop of 15bhp will never be noticed in real life driving.

ThargDrop in engine output doesn’t seem to make much difference to the Countryman’s performance. The 0-60 time drops by some two-tenths of a sec. Not a great loss. More important, though, is that the 4×4 versions will do it with no hint of front-drive scrabble to wheels.

GeorgieHurrah! It’s back and it’s back in its rightful position at the top of my (now much diminished) ‘Alternatives’ list. At the start of Q3 my list dropped from 10 options to 1 – an Arona. It now stands at 3.
Even so – Power goes down; AP goes up! Kinda takes the shine off a bit for those of us who know full well that it used to be more powerful. Still, as other have pointed out, it probably won’t make a difference in the ‘real world’. It’s just that 192 is a bigger number, and is therefore just ‘better’. Because it just is.
🙂
I’ve been debating the green paintwork with grey interior combo for a while, now. Nice to see that it ‘works’ in the flesh as well as in the Configurator.
July 28, 2020 at 11:00 am #120565WE have had our Countryman Phev for 18 months now and we are really pleased with it.
They are very quick and great fun to drive with enough space to keep everyone happy.
We have a home charger fitted which helps.
The build quality seems good as well as the comfort.
The dealership have been very good and actually gave me the New mini Electric for 24 hours last week to test drive and i must say that is a lot of fun and very quick.
So based on our first 18 months we would recommend the Countryman.
