New car registrations declined 1.6 per cent in August, while EVs surged to a record market share.

There were 92,573 registrations last month, down from 94,094 in August 2018. Business sales climbed 38.6 per cent from 2,490 to 3,452, but this wasn’t enough to offset decreases of 1.7 per cent and 3.5 per cent in the private and fleet sectors respectively.

It was good news for EVs, with registrations rocketing 377.5 per cent from 659 in August 2018 to 3,147 in August 2019, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This constitutes a record market share of 3.4 per cent, contributing to a year-to-date sales boost of 93.1 per cent.

Very low sales month coupled with Tesla 3 going on sale. Unlikely to be repeated in a normal month.
