I know the company lime from Motability operations is that dealers shouldn’t discount AP’s

but as with the ‘deals and discounts’ thread on here  – obviously many dealers do, mainly much bigger ones.

if there’s no discounts in your area / region – how have you / would you go about negotiating a discount on an AP???

please share your tips & success stories 🙂

The best way, is to find a discount on your car, doesnt have to be local, print it out and present to the sales guy, at the last minute after a test drive, and just before ordering, if they don’t concede, just say “ok, I will put down a decent deposit if we agree, or I will have to think about it, and can you ask the sales manager, before we go. You can always agree to the price later if it what you want. I think due to the lack of competition in Scotland, ots always going to be tough, but there again they don’t know how far away you will travel to save £500.

I tend to use this excellent forum to find out what the best offers (if any) are on the car we are interested in. Doesn’t matter where they are. I don’t ask the local dealers anything about discounts until we have had test drives and are ready to order, so that they remain keen to oblige (well, some do, others aren’t that bothered at the best of times, as we know). When we are ready to order I then ask if they will match the offer and also provide a discount on any options. After listening to all the tripe about “we hardly make any money out of Motability orders” (which is nonsense, as these orders count towards their franchise and manufacturer volume bonuses) I tell them that it doesn’t matter to me where I order the car from. I did a 160 mile round trip to get our current car in order to save £500 off the AP, so can demonstrate to them that I’m not just calling their bluff. If they agree to the discount or come close enough to negate the need to travel further afield, they get the order. If not, we have a day trip. Simples ?

P.S. The problem at present is that, as far as I can tell, there are no discounts anywhere on most of the cars on our shortlist ?

                I’m a strong believer in don’t ask – don’t get.

I’ve also called around different franchises in my area once I’ve decided on my car.

I’m waiting on my next one (due in May) and I managed to get £295 off an AP of £2695. This is the most I’ve managed, previously I’ve got around £100 off.
That said, it’s with a dealer I’ve used before and they have done it as I have since moved away.
I think a 160 mile round trip is worth it though.
