My vote for this award this quarter goes to the Vauxhall Astra Hatchback PHEV at £8000. Now we are restricted to 3 year leases again and with an electric range of “up to 40 miles”, that up-front payment could never make sense.

Wow, that’s utterly ridiculous. With the £750 ‘golden hello’ payment coming to an end soon too, Motability are simply pricing many of us out of the scheme altogether.
We’ve had to really push ourselves to afford the AP on a car that meets our needs this time, fortunately we got our order in before 1st October as it’s gone up by £1500, which would have made it unachievable for us. It’s a major worry what the scheme will be able to offer in 3 years time when we are forced to change car.

I expect that, for whatever reason, Stellantis do not expect to , nor even wish to supply those vehicles to the scheme. Hence will put a high unit cost on them which distills down to a high AP to deter such volume custom.
This could be any number of reasons including:
Stellantis would rather market/promote another of their brands/vehicles to the scheme – they have enough brands after all.
Or, there could be more production slots available at one of their other brands thus as above, promote that instead of Vauxhall.
The other brands may even be more profitable to Stellantis.
Although not one for conspiracy theories, it could even be that Stellates ultimately want rid of Vauxhall (or the Astra). Vauxhall is their only non-EU/non-US brand and a bit of an outlier from their European volume brands with French Peugeot/Citroen, Italian Fiat/Alfa and German Opel etc.
Hence they remove what was once a large scheme volume seller by pricing them out of the market (yet are still being seen to offer them but know hardly anyone would pay that price). They then claim they aren’t selling, so jettison the brand and/or specific vehicle.
Oe even almost the opposite, by positioning the Vauxhall brand to a more premium brand so they sell fewer vehicles at higher cost (so greater profit).
Who knows what these large corporations have in mind for any of their brands. But they will have priced the Vauxhalls to the scheme for a reason!
October 4, 2024 at 7:37 am #290125As I said in a other post, it could be a typo..or ..
Its to offset the £15k levy for ICE cars over their quota.
It will be the same for other ICE cars, not just Stallantis.
Carrot and Stick to move everyone over to EV,s.
This year its 22% EV,s an I think its 29% for 2025, something like that.
But the amount of vehicles on the scheme stay the same.

It can’t be that as these cars are PHEVs, not pure ICE cars (not that it would be that anyway)
October 4, 2024 at 10:24 am #290132Surely theyve had Zero orders for the Astra at that £8k asking price? Ridiculous.
October 4, 2024 at 10:32 am #290134@glos guy
Nope, an ICE car is an ICE car no matter if it has Hybrid or PHEV tagged on to it. It is still. £15K penalty to the manufacturer if over quota.
It is exactly that. Maybe the AP is so high because it has a gold plated toilet in the back…mmmm??
I see the SMMT are throwing wobblies again, they represent garages trying to sell cars. Not that it matters what they say, they are a car club and do not make policies. If they want to sell cars, they need to do better

That is the reason its on. No one should buy at that price, but it keeps the number of available motability cars on the scheme.
October 4, 2024 at 2:19 pm #290148£7,999 for an Alfa Romeo Tonale must be trying to compete with the Astra.
October 4, 2024 at 2:48 pm #290151Vauxhall want over £5k for the same model of Astra but, with a 54kWh battery 🤣
October 4, 2024 at 2:48 pm #290152Quote from Autocar today:
Demand from private buyers for diesel cars was more than for EVs in September, leading industry bosses to renew calls for urgent government support amid “serious concerns” that a waning electric car market “is putting environmental ambitions at risk”.
76% of EVs were fleet with their huge tax subsidies. ZEV loony mandate due for another government u turn, methinks.
October 4, 2024 at 10:44 pm #290195To be fair, although most APs are getting absurd, one or two have gone the other way. When we first started looking to change our car in January, my notes tell me the VW ID.4 was £5799. It’s now £999.
It’s the extreme volatility of both the car choice and AP amounts on the scheme that p!$$es me off. It makes it a total lottery as to what you can get/afford at the time you need to change car.
October 5, 2024 at 8:14 am #290207Agree, Ant3. £999for a £50k iD4 verses £7999 for a £50k Honda CRV makes no sense, especially as retained value after 3 years would favour the Honda. As mentioned before, the Touran has come and gone, the Allspace is still on the scheme but is stock only as the new Tayron is revealed next week and the Kodiaq was diesel only, now joined by the plug in at the same price, unlike the Tiguan. Best to grab a relative bargain while you can, if it suits and never procrastinate. Aside from BEVs, the Tuscon PHEV ultimate @ £2999 looks to be the current bargain, imho.
October 5, 2024 at 9:03 am #290213Are we slowly getting priced out, there is plenty to choose from if you can afford it, but are we slowly being channelled down by Mobility to a few specific manufactures with affordable AP ?
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
