The listed price of manufacturer fitted extras includes VAT but the car is invoiced VAT free, so the price we pay for extras should be VAT free too.  Any dealer that doesn’t discount the price of extras is profiteering at our expense and we should get about 17% off at least.

On our BMW we got 20%.

          Hi Matt

When I ordered my X2 and the sports pack, I got nothing in terms of discount. However. It is down to each dealership whether they will offer any discount on extras.

It is always worth asking though. Just make sure you get it in writing

Joss is right about getting it in writing. When I picked up the car the guy I was dealing with had left.

Soper BMW at Lincoln offered us 10% off any extras.

Then, Pete, in my view they are pocketing an additional 6.77% of the price of the extras on top of what Motability pay them for the car.  I would find that unacceptable.

                    @Wigwam

You know I never even considered the issue of Vat free on extras. Thanks for that Wigwam.

If you look closely, there is no distinction between extras and the car price.

The invoice billed to Motability includes the cost of the car and the extras.
Do not think HMRC would let car companies cheat on VAT…that is not going to happen.

Bean counters dont let stuff like that get past them…lol.

Besides – the whole motability scheme is a Govt subsidy to the car industry disguised as a charitable trust.

On my car, metallic paint is included. What is NOT included is Pearlescent paint, which is about 750 or something. The dealer only charges 150 for that option on Motability.

Ade, Motability buys cars VAT free. It only pays VAT when it sells the car on.  That’s the deal it has with HMRC.  So any extras should also be VAT free when you pay for them.

Yup motability is a charity and it doesnt buy and sell, it will act as an agent for a lease company. It is essentially a broker..

Not really Ade.  Motability Operations Ltd is the leasing company which is wholly owned by Motability the charity to whom it is responsible.  It operates solely to supply cars to us.

Oh when we got our last car we got some extras and didn’t get discount. I’m going to dig out the invoice, I don’t expect to pay V A T if they are not having to pass it to HMRC

Not correct. The dealers invoice to Motability includes VAT. Options and extras are invoiced directly to the customer including VAT.

I worked in many dealerships as an accountant.

No, Motability Operations Ltd is owned by the four big banks, not Motability Charity. No dividends are declared, all profits being reinvested into the scheme or donations to Motability Charity.

Sorry you are wrong. I worked in the motor trade as an accountant for many years. All invoices to Motability include Vat.

Bmw will give you the discount motability get off the actual value of the car and that will be the percentage of discount you get off extras, had the bmw 120iM for a month back in 2018 which I was going through the hassle of pip assessment and even with strong evidence from all 5 of my specialists stating that I needed my car to get around they said I didn’t and had to appeal, sadly at the time it scared me to taking the 2k one of payment to get me back on the road. But on that car I added a few extras and got the 25% discount motability got off the vehicle transfered to the extras.

Littledave, what I said about the VAT on extras I was told when I got our last car two years ago.  Apologies to everyone if I was wrong and raised people’s expectations.  And yes the banks hold the shareholding of Motability Operations but it is answerable to the Charity – I was attempting to correct Ade’s interpretation that Motability is essentially a broker.  Sorry for causing confusion (and believing what car salesmen say).
