I have a question about mode 2 charging.  I have been asked to install an outside socket for a 330e phev.  the vehicle is supplied with a mode 2 charging cable.  The owner has been advised that a standard outside socket will do.

as I understand it,  as of Jan 2019.

there must be at least a type A rcd installed at cu/dB  or at charging point/socket or part of the cables device.

there must be o-pen fault protection for (TN-c-s/PME) via an earth electrode or o-pen fault protection device.

Is this correct?

is the supplied mode 2 charging cable for temporary not continued use?  i.e charging at a friends house.

Yes, mode 2 needs a type A RCD, the latest regs are here.

Mode 2 chargers have a control box fitted to the lead, but you’ll definitely want to put in some form of circuit protection, if in doubt I’d get the cars owner to get in a proper spark, you don’t want to get blamed for screwing their shiny beamer!

thanks for the advice.  I had advised the owner that all of the above was required,  but he was telling me he had spoken to BMW and had posted the question on a BMW owners forum and was told most had standard plugs.  I tried putting the question to BMW today myself to see what they were saying.  Got as far as me asking about o-pen fault protection and the conversation ended.

That’s the biggest issue, if the owner is happy with just using a standard unprotected outdoor circuit, that’s up to him and it will probably do the job, but if you put it in against regulation and something goes wrong, you’re liable.

I’d make sure that you’re covered, and at the very least get a contract to say you’re doing exactly the job the customer is asking for, and that you’ve at least advised and recommended a different solution.
