As you have seen we took delivery of our car Saturday gone, which had been on order from the 3rd Oct. At the same time we ordered a new manual wheelchair with the car for £100 as the wife has lost loads of weight and needed a smaller one.

In October after the Order with Mobility was confirmed we got a letter from Bewick Mobility couple of days later saying that they had it and would supply it the day after collection of the car directly to our home address.

Phoned them this Saturday to confirm everthing was ok, guy on the phone “oh yeah its here somewhere we’ll send it out”

No word so phoned today they say it hasn’t even been built??  If MINI can build and supply a car in 12 weeks i’m sure they can source and deliver a wheelchair. Their excuse is because we ordered PINK its made to order. This is after them stating in october they had it.

Phoned Motability so chased up and said we should have it soon??

Our thinking is that they have sold the original as it was in Pink and forgot about our replacement.

According to Motability website it should have been supplied in the boot of car upon collection, so guy in customer services wasn’t happy with what they had done.

Anyone else had anything like this?

I believe it was myself who post the original thread about the motability offer of the wheel chair.

Now I also understood that any wheel chair order would be in the boot of car on collection.

So looks like bad service from both the car dealership and the chair supplier.  I would kick off big style If it was me.

Our only option is to complain to the dealer and then motability. However, how do we know Motability have actually bollocked shoddy service from dealership. In short we don’t.

Wasn’t the dealer, the shop refused to deliver it to them and said they will deal directly with us, then they didn’t.
that’s why Motability guy was peed off.

have to wait til Thursday then it will be kick off time

The following is Official literature from Motability to Dealership on Suppling Lightweight manual wheelchairs.

Having listened to feedback, we understand that some Motability Scheme customers need additional mobility help when they reach their destination.

In 2018, we ran a pilot to allow customers to choose a lightweight manual wheelchair in addition to their Scheme car.

            We had a great response:

“Anyone who needs a wheelchair, and can get one through MO, should definitely take it up.”
From 1 April 2019, all car Scheme customers will be able to choose a lightweight manual wheelchair, when they lease a new car.

There is a choice of two different lightweight manual wheelchairs which can be ordered in a number of frame sizes and set up as self-propelled or attendant-controlled.

Regardless of which model is most suitable, each wheelchair costs £100. The lightweight wheelchairs collapse into a compact package and should fit comfortably into the boot of most vehicles. However, this may depend on whether any other adaptations are being fitted to the vehicle.

You will receive the current £25 adaptation payment for every lightweight manual wheelchair supplied.

            The wheelchairs
Scheme customers will be able to select one of the following wheelchairs:

            VAN OS Excel G-Logic
            Karma Ergo Lite 2.
Both wheelchairs can be set up as self-propelled or attendant-controlled and will be covered for maintenance issues throughout the term of the vehicle lease.

How do you arrange a wheelchair for your customer?
You can select a wheelchair for your customer at the time of application, using Online Applications (OLA).

First, the customer must choose the wheelchair and setup that best suits their needs.

You can then add the wheelchair as an adaptation in OLA.

Adding the wheelchair as an adaptation
Add a lightweight manual wheelchair to an application in the same way as other adaptations:

In the ‘Adaptations’ screen, add a new adaptation.
Select ‘Lightweight Manual Wheelchair’ from the ‘Group’ dropdown list.
Choose the type of wheelchair in the ‘Adaptation’ dropdown.
In the ‘Installer’ dropdown, you’ll see a list of LMW suppliers ordered by distance. Choose a supplier (this will be a PWSS dealer).
Make sure that you note down the name of the supplier – you’ll need to contact them to arrange delivery of the wheelchair.
Ignore the familiarisation text at the bottom of the screen – this relates to any other adaptations that the customer has requested for the vehicle.

            LMW Screen 3
            What happens next?
Once you have submitted the application – and it has passed to the ‘pending’ state – the PWSS dealer you selected will receive a notification including:

            The customer’s details.
            Your dealership details.
            The vehicle details.
The model of the wheelchair needed.
The type of setup: self-propelled or attendant-controlled.
            The anticipated handover date.
They will contact the customer to ensure that the choice of wheelchair is suitable for their needs.

The PWSS dealer will then source the wheelchair.

            Arranging delivery
Contact your chosen LMW supplier – you can find contact details for LMW suppliers on the Dealer Resource Centre, or using the Find a Dealer tool on the customer website.
Arrange a delivery date – make sure that the wheelchair is delivered to your dealership in the seven days running up to the Confirmed Delivery Date (CDD).
Keep the LMW supplier up-to-date – you must contact the PWSS dealer if there are any changes to the anticipated handover date and when the confirmed delivery date is agreed.
If you have not heard from the PWSS dealer by 14 days from the CDD, contact them to confirm the delivery of the wheelchair.

            Payment
You need to take payment from the customer ahead of the handover date. You will hand over the wheelchair at the same time as the vehicle.

What happens at the End of Contract?
The customer will need to return the wheelchair at the End of Contract event.

We do not require the wheelchair to be returned to Motability Operations. Please dispose of it as you would with other adaptations that are no longer needed. If the wheelchair is in good condition, you could retain it for demonstration purposes.

What if the wheelchair needs maintenance or repair?
If a LMW requires maintenance or repair, ask the customer to contact our Customer Services which will arrange for the work to be completed.

Just read through that and it seems strange that the customer ( us ) must return it but it’s not to go back to Mota and has to be disposed of by the dealer ( however they see fit ) what a waste! Surely the customer should be blue to retain it for use or have as a spare and if no longer required be able to donate it?

doesnt seem very ethical to me

anyways I hope you get your issue sorted ASAP mate ??

I kinda get it, after all it’s a £300+ chair and we “only” pay £100 for the lease

Odd? No matter the cost to us, why are dealers allowed to dispose of them? Surely that means scrapping them as I can’t see many dealers having space to store used adaptions?
Is it worth the effort to sell them on used?

Maybe the supplier buys them back for parts.

I think I’d just accidentally forget to put it in the boot and see what happens.

Either that or put a case of beer in the boot and wink suggestively (not THAT kind of suggestively) at the dealer

If Mota wanted them back to recycle/try recoup some of their money I wouldn’t bat an eyelid

but the fact they saying they don’t want and leaving it up the dealers to dispose of is crazy

some dealers might recycle, some might attempt to flog on gumtree and some might just fire them into a skip ( or canal lol )

even worse is when the young team spots a skip full of them and nabs the lot so they can have their version of wacky races round the streets ??

in this day of recycling and environmental issues I think it’s an Own Goal by Mota to have this practice , hopefully it will change in time ??

i would def go down your route and say I forgot it Phil, the dealer would probably be thankful you did so they didn’t have to store it!

ill leave the winking at car salesmen to you Colin… ????

Guys – I need to some advice. I am interested in getting this wheelchair from my daughter who is 17 years old and around 5ft4 in height and 68kg. Which wheelchair would you recommend in terms of size? 16,18, or 20 inch framesize? I can’t seem to find any useful information anywhere.

                        Thank you in advance.

Zaheer, each wheelchair is different to each person, so i would advise going into a local mobility store which stocks them and try them out physically. Then order the correct one with the car.

We only ordered this one with the car because it it exactly the same as her old one just a smaller width so knew it would be perfect.

Oh and it arrived this morning in red, not pink. But we are keeping it as it’s a darker red with a black frame, so looks quite nice.

Again, don’t know waht happens at the end of lease, might just “lose” it…..

Noel – thank you for the response. I’m going to find a local stockist and take her in to try it. I might also measure the width of her current one supplied by wheelchair services – she has long been due an upgrade as she’s had this since she was 13/14. She is much taller now however, but we are on a long waiting list with Wheelchair services ( been nearly two years already) who I am told are significantly understaffed.

When we bought her last chair we visited the local company and picked the one she liked, then went and bought it off the internet for half the price, this time as they are the same chair we knew already what we needed. Our NHS issued one lasted about a month before i sent it back and bought our own privatly.

The |Excel G Logic are so much nicer, lighter and more comfortable than the nhs issued ones, and they aren’t as bulky so easier for me to lift in and out of car.

But like I said, everyone is different and should try before purchase,

Motability will know the local shop who will supply yours based on your postcode so might be worth asking them and visiting directly and sort it that way
