Other half has a lithium powered travel scooter, mainly used for holidays. Not used since June, I topped the battery up a couple of months ago, came to top up again today and was surprised it took 3 hours to charge. It is a very large capacity (Li Tech Marathon) 26 mile range. Do lithium batteries self discharge, we have had the very warm weather in August if that affects it. Cheers.

The rate of self-discharge is also heavily dependent on temperature. The hotter a given battery is, the quicker it will self-discharge. Most lithium-ion batteries have a self-discharge rate of between 5 and 10% per month. This means that a fully charged battery will lose between 5 and 10% of its charge per month.

Cheers rox that’s very helpful. I thought the high temperatures we had in July and August May have speeded up the discharge rate. The scooter is stored in the conservatory, I’m glad I took the battery out and left it under the stairs, it would’ve cooked.

This thread got me a bit worried when I first read it because back in March I got myself an auto-folding scooter that came with Li-on batteries.

I have two batteries for the scooter used in a flip-flop way, one on, one off, after every use and as it used a few times a week its not a problem.

Where my problem is, if it is a problem, is my old scooter that I upgraded the batteries from lead acid to li-on and I haven’t used it since March.

Now I’ve always been lead to believe that Li-on batteries have a very slow discharge rate but should be stored after a full charge. So seeing this thread the other day I quickly got the old scooter batteries from out under the stairs and charged them up and they were fully charged within ten minutes so in 6 plus months they haven’t discharge much at all but thanks for a timely reminder guys. ?

I have a 2015 Pride Quest , bought second hand at 18 months old, in case of emergency & holidays , and it came with a sealed Lithium battery pack .

It has been unused, folded up in the garden shed for over 3 years , and last week I was putting the garden chair covers away, and had to move it.

So I put the key in and rode it out – still enough charge in it for 3-4 minutes use, after all that time.

Charged the battery for 4 hours or so, and it now shows it to be full – haven’t tried it since, and although I am confident it will be ok, I am now checking every week & charging if necessary, because ‘ have you seen the price of them ‘?

Mike, not sure I’d leave the battery pack in the shed, I may be mistaken and I’m happy to be corrected, but I’m not sure constant freezing temperatures in the winter are good for batteries. I keep ours under the stairs.

Mike, lithium batteries last longer if stored with 40-50% charge.  Best not to keep topping it up like you would a lead acid battery. Only charge it when you want to use it.

Spare lithium batteries for computers were recommended kept in a fridge to slow down their normal deterioration, so unless it ever freezes in your shed, Mike, it seems like a good place!

thanks, it does get extremely cold as it is a metal shed.

what I have done over the summer is put some cover over it in  that I bought some

artificial grass at a really knockdown price and covered the whole  shed,  except for the vents .

time will tell
