TardelliAs I am disabled, I have to apply for my licence again,
I have been waiting for 6 months now.
The phone’s are always busy, I gather there are some delays due to the pandemic, is this right?
They have all the information.
Am I doing something wrong or just have to suck it up and wait?

@Tardelli I had to apply for my renewal a few weeks ago. I did it online on the Saturday and received my new one the following Thursday of that week. Hope that helps.

TardelliThanks for the Reply @sean but I cannot as far as I understand do it online?
As the system will not allow my condition to do so.
So I have to do physically and not online ?
Which is a pain.
December 15, 2021 at 1:33 pm #171704I also did mine on line. Pretty straight forward I thought. What is your condition @Tardelli
I am also in the process of doing my blue badge on line.

GeorgieHi, Tardelli!
I was in the same boat – my conditions also meant I couldn’t renew my Short-term Medical Driving Licence on-line and had to apply via form filling.
In total it took the DVLA eight and a half months to complete my application and no, you really can’t contact them about it any more. The email address vanished at the start of last year and the contact phone number disappeared at the end of July. When I did manage to take to someone in early June the bloke I spoke to had no idea how long the process was going to take (there was a shortage of Medical Assessors, plus the ones they had went on strike for a month) and I was told I just had to wait for the DVLA to either contact me or send me the new Licence.
Not really helpful as such, but at least you know you’ve not done anything wrong.

TardelliThanks for the reply @Georgie I think it is just a case of waiting.
I think there is more important things going on.

December 15, 2021 at 5:16 pm #171722DVLA is carrying so much back, there always playing catch up. And yes @Tardelli a lot of it is due to Covid.

Motorists who submit paper applications to renew their driver’s licence could still face a 10-week wait to receive their documents, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has said.
The agency apologised and said industrial action and social distancing in Swansea had led to the delays.
DVLA sites in the city have recorded hundreds of Covid cases among its 6,000-strong workforce.Joss

GeorgieThat’s pretty much what is said when I applied for my renewal back in March. The paper-work, including asking for and receiving details from my Specialist, was done in six weeks. The problem was the shortage of Medical Assessors – getting someone qualified to actually read the Specialist info and formally decide that I was still ‘fit to drive’ took months. Once they had done their bit I then had to send an up-to-date photo, but even that only caused another two week wait.
Hopefully things will take much less time now. But as long as it’s all sorted within 12 months of sending in the application then it’s still okay to continue driving, which is the main thing. 🙂
December 16, 2021 at 2:13 pm #171780I applied online for a renewal of my standard 10 year driving licence last Saturday (11th) and it arrived today (16th).
December 17, 2021 at 2:31 am #171836The problem with the licence is when your application goes via the medical team. Mine took an age to come through. I wrote to Grant Shapps complaining about it and received a reply from the DVLA about nine months later!
Best of luck.

JojoeI’m on a 3 year medical license. Got my renewal in June, had medical early July, got new license in October. My original license expired July, but you can still drive with an expired medical license if you have sent the renewal form, as your GP is happy for you to continue driving. This is under section 88 of the road traffic act.
December 17, 2021 at 12:19 pm #171887When my license was changed from an everyday license to one that had conditions of adaptions added to it the DVLA was fine with what my neurology consultant saying I was fine to drive with an adapted car.
All was good until my own GP put a hold on it because DVLA said my license did not need changing other than from All Cars to Automatics only and I did not need to take any further test.
Because DVLA like all government departments send out computerised letters or standard letters as they use to call them my GP took it that they were saying I could just carry on driving in any car, with or without adaptions.
Lucky for myself this was a one off change over and don’t have to go through the doctors or DVLA medical department when updating my license now unless something changes but I’m sure at the best of times its a slow procedure to go through even without viruses.

XI’m still waiting for my licence from the DVLA. My medical licence expired in August. I sent the forms back to them, they said they now need to contact my neurologist and diabetes doctors etc.
Visited the hospital last month and saw my doctors who said I’m good to drive and all DVLA forms have been filled in and sent back to them.
DVLA say they are yet to be received and scanned into the system.
I am ordering my car on the 24th but as I have an expired licence I doubt I’ll be able to do this unless I go through the route of my brother coming with me and saying he’ll be driving it.
DVLA sent me a letter saying under section 88 driving act I can still drive as long as doctors have advised me not to drive.
Am I right in saying I won’t be able to put my name on the insurance despite having the DVLA section 88 letter?
Also, it’s a pain the the butt to get hold of the DVLA. I usually call another department in the DVLA and then ask to be transferred to medical. Works every time and instead of telling you they are too busy to take the call it actually adds you to the queue.

JojoeX
I think your issue will be the insurance, I’m sure the dealer asks for your driving license for the application. You may have to give your old license and explain section 88 to them if they ask, they may not even notice it’s expired.

XI think I’ll just have to put it in bros name to avoid any hassle then once my licence is sorted I can add myself. I guess a new car is going to take about 6 months to arrive anyways

XMotability told me to call the DVLA and tell him that I agree to allow Motability to do a manual licence check.
Called DVLA. They told me they have put a note on the account and Motability have 1 week from today to do the check (hopefully this is done on Friday whilst ordering the car).
Feels like I have to get involved at every single step to move things along.

XSome helpful info that assures me I can still drive
