So I’ve ordered a grandland x recently, the 1.2 Sri nav.
I was a mechanic up untill I was 30, when my spine finally gave in, but that’s another story.
My thing is , going back when I was a mechanic, if you told me that they were going to make a three cylinder 1.2 turbo that would be powering a SUV, with a 0-60 of circa 9 ISH seconds, I would of laughed my head of and called you mad!
My dad taught me mechanics at a young age, we were having a laugh about the fact back in the day if I’d told him that he would of slapped me round the back of the head for saying something stupid!
Alright not a great topic I know but things they can do with these smaller engines now really amaze me

ajnA friend of mine got one of those cars @Richy, he loves it, tbh I was tempted to get one on the scheme, in fact it was 2nd on the list.
Ended up with the xc40 b4, my Wife always had Volvo’s so you can guess the rest ?.April 9, 2021 at 10:47 am #145041@ajn I’m hoping I like it, I had a look round a friend’s older one, then got permission from my wife (she has final say on the cars, even though she doesn’t drive haha) I actually phoned picadors and done the order over the phone, they said we’re keep you updated but it will be middle of July if not before, so I haven’t actually driven one or seen a black one apart from pictures, thing is they’ve changed the alloys to black recently, and was told on the grandland forum it might turn up totally different as they seem to change specs a lot, the wife has said it better turn up nice or I’m in trouble ??

GeorgieIt’s not just you, Richy. I’ve only actually had 2 cars, a 2.0 diesel and a 1.6 petrol, and until last year I wasn’t even bothering to look at anything less than a 1.6. Now I’m eyeing up the newly arrived 1.0 Ford Puma Vignale as a definite maybe for next time. Especially as my previous favourite, the 176bhp Mini Countryman, is getting further out of reach Quarter by Quarter . . .

RichardI wonder if this will continue the drive (sorry) or the continual lowering of the max age of used cars in the future.
We’ve seen for some time now the reduction in older cars as they break sooner or one expensive part fails & takes the car out and now with these tiny 3 cylinder turbo charged engines I wonder if they’ll get to a certain age/mileage & that’ll be it for the engine, Live fast die young so to speak.
There’s been anecdotes of some of these tiny turbos doing just that dying quickly so I wonder what that trend will mean for used longevity, assuming ice cars don’t just get banned outright anyway at some point

I was always a big engine person, I loved my Mondeo st220, but then finally after a few years of battling with DWP for my mobility side of things , I decided to move to a higher up vehicle as cars were getting to low to get into, so chose the qashqui, mainly because it was pretty and nil ap , it’s a lot of car for nil ap too, I could have gone for another qashqui, but fancied a change, the qashqui is 1.5 diesel, the adblue engine, I thought it was quite nippy to be fair, but looking at the specs the grandland is quicker, I do like my spirited driving (when the wife isn’t shouting slow down) , hopefully the 1.2 in the grandland is a bit nippy, although I do try to behave honest ?????

I can’t see a three cylinder 1.2 turbo putting out that much power for long before things start to go wrong , I would of thought these little turbo engine that are being pushed to crazy power can be that reliable, I guess time will tell, but from a mechanics point of view I can’t see them having a lot of longevity
April 9, 2021 at 2:06 pm #145069Know what you mean about engine size and output. My 2.0L mini Cooper S puts out around 190bhp, which is more than twice the early Rover 3.5L V8 and still less than the last 4.0L models. Similarly with my previous car – 2.0L Skoda Superb petrol four-pot: 240bhp and would outperform many sports cars from only a decade before. I used to worry about over stressing small capacity engine but they seem to handle almost anything and I ain’t doing the mileage anyway. Still reluctant to use the launch control though – handbook has dire warnings!
April 9, 2021 at 2:41 pm #145072I will put the grandland little engine to the test, I won’t speed though it’s more just, acceleration upto the limits, like coming down slip roads etc, my wife tells me off if I’m doing four miles per hour above the speed limit, which is fair to be honest, gone are my days of ignoring speed limits, I’ve had a clean licence for 20 years and will keep it that way
April 9, 2021 at 2:54 pm #145075Getting this tiny engine in my next car a Peugeot 5008. As a large 7 seater it may seem out of its depths but 95% driving is around town with only the family holidays involving a full very heavy car. So long as it can manage to cruise at 70mph on motorway not much else to worry about. Currently have 148bhp VW Touran which on paper looks more powerful but when you factor in the Peugeot is significantly lighter there’s not a lot in it.
Current Car
KIA Sportage GT Line Mhev
Previous Cars
Peugeot 5008 Allure Premium
VW Touran SEL
Citreon C4 PicassoApril 9, 2021 at 3:06 pm #145078Likewise, my new Peugeot 208 GT with the 131 bhp 3-cylinder turbo engine should be here within the next week or so in glorious Faro Yellow. The 208 is only a small (and light) car of course, but on my test drive with the above configuration it was certainly more than capable! The 8-speed automatic electronic gearbox shifted precisely – spot on infact – although there’s always the option to use the steering wheel paddles if you wish.
Certainly no gripes from me on the 1.2 engine or, for that matter, from other 208 GT owners with the 130 engine. It has won several awards in the recent past – and for very good reason.

Paul DFew years ago I had the Kuga 2.0 Diesel. It was ok but kind of heavy front end and indifferent when accelerating hard.
When the time came to change sales women talked me into Kuga petrol 1.5 test drive .I couldn’t believe the transformation .
Fantastic engine!Ecoboost 1.5 150 bhp
April 9, 2021 at 5:21 pm #145089I had a Grandland X a while ago as a temporary company car. It had the 1.5 diesel engine in it and was utterly pathetic.

great stuff, and I have to disagree with your comment of not a great topic….
I think it’s a great topic..
I laughed at that statement above.. Good old Dad .

Solent sorry to go off topic got the Centre console shelf for my CHR off eBay for £5 fits lovely
April 9, 2021 at 6:17 pm #145100Glad to hear it Mike… and a bargain too at a fiver!
Great bit of kit which is so handy for keeping little bits n pieces in. As you know, the centre console bin is very deep – especially when looking for small items that used to get lost in there! That tray helps immensely.
Hope you’re enjoying your C-HR Mike. Terrific car IMHO.
April 9, 2021 at 6:32 pm #145101I love it
April 9, 2021 at 7:41 pm #145107Now you just need these Mike. They still look like new even 3-years down the road!
