Hi guys new to the forum and I’ve this afternoon placed a order for a new car and was advised of a 9 month wait
I have since found this site and seen a discussion on wait times etc and someone commented to check autotrader to see if any dealers have new ones in stock
I have just done that and found a dealer 2 hours away that has a brand new one in stock in the colour I ordered ready to go it even states motability available in the car description
I am obviously now tempted to call them in the morning to confirm they still have it and if they do ill cancel the order I made today and go and collect from them
Has anyone cancelled previously and if so how long did it take before the system recognises the cancellation allowing you to place a new order ?
Thanks in advance

Talk to the dealer you originally ordered from, it should be a simple enough process, that day or the next. I cancelled last week and reordered somewhere else.
January 20, 2024 at 5:11 pm #255858I cancelled in the morning and my online account showed immediately that I could order again (which I did, a few hours later)
January 22, 2024 at 12:54 pm #255981Thanks everyone for your help I’m very grateful
The dealership that has the car in stock have been really difficult to deal with 🙁
I called on Saturday and was told there was not a single person that can help was promised a call back on Monday morning
This morning no phone call so we called them to now be told the Motability sales person is off until the 29th January so another week
I explained I actually want the car advertised as being in stock she stated its still available but there is no one in the dealership that will be able to process the order for motability
I offered a deposit to hold it until he’s back and again this was refused as I’m a motability customer and they won’t take deposits from us and its a first come first served basis so will now probably miss out on the car
So not a very good experience so far
January 22, 2024 at 1:23 pm #255984Hopefully you haven’t cancelled your previous order until the new garage have confirmed the stock car is yours?

Thats good. Don’t cancel anything until you’re sure you can have the stock car
January 23, 2024 at 10:59 am #256033Hi
I cancelled a Hyundai Tucson due to crazy lead times in the morning and in the afternoon I went and ordered a Renault Austel from stock with a waiting time of 2 weeks. Well done Renault!! I think the Renault Austel is a better car too
April 18, 2025 at 10:01 pm #304503I once ordered a car at the end of a quarter. A week later the new quarter introduced another vehicle (from the same brand) and I asked if I could cancel and reorder the new vehicle at the same dealership.
The dealership said “no”.
At that time, I thought this was the rule, so didn’t think I could do anything about it. I now understand that when buying a car (or other goods) in person, the seller cannot force you to complete the purchase, but can charge you for any costs they have incurred. Without having to go through the stress of court proceedings, is there a limit that Motability would step in and tell the dealership that their cancellation cost is too much?

I doubt Motability would have a fixed financial limit as to how much ‘cost’ the dealer has incurred.
It is one thing ordering a standard ‘factory build’ vehicle, then cancelling a day or week or so later. The cost to the dealership would be negligible.
At the other end of the scale, the situation could well be different if the customer ordered a vehicle many months ago in an obscure colour, with unusual and expensive optional extras or even adaptations.
The car having now been built, delivered to the dealership, adapted, pdi’d and even registered to the customer for over a week (so no longer reversible by the DVLA). Only for the customer to then cancel at this point (assuming it is the right vehicle, right adaptions, not damaged and is simply a ‘change of mind’ by the customer).
In this case the costs incurred by the dealership could be substantial as they could be left with a more or less unsellable pre-registered vehicle on their hands which they would have to discount very heavily to dispose of.
It would be probably one of those cases Motability would try to wriggle their way out of so as not to end up as ‘piggy in the middle’ and ultimately the dealership could pursue the customer through the courts to offset their losses.
It is probably why some dealerships now take full payment for optional extras as well as taking a substantial deposit against the AP at the time of ordering.
April 19, 2025 at 4:03 pm #304525I cancelled a VW because they messed me around. They had even registered the car.
April 19, 2025 at 5:35 pm #304530@gilders I have never heard of anyone being charged a cancellation fee – ever. It would be very difficult to enforce anyway, as we never enter into a contractually binding agreement with a dealership. The only legally binding agreement is between the customer and Motability Operations at the point that the customer accepts the car by entering the PIN.
There have been one or two people over the years report on this forum that a dealership has played silly buggers about refunding any deposit after a cancelled order, but once they went back to the dealership and quoted the above, the money was refunded.
All that being said, I think it would be very bad form to cancel once the dealer has received the car, unless it is not to the specification ordered.

April 19, 2025 at 9:34 pm #304536Remember
Not all cars sitting in the dealers showroom are available for motability.
If they are
Short in anticipated dealerships profits, it won’t generally be available to Motability customers.
or
If the dealership have already paid the manufacturer for the car, as Motabilty can usually buy the cars for less than the dealership can.
All about numbers and profit.
