How can this happen.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has set aside £58.2bn to settle lawsuits arising from clinical negligence that occurred in England before 1 April 2024, the PAC disclosed.

They have no money for nothing, trying to reduce PIP payments, UC payments for people on ESA no money for winter fuel allowance. How on earth can they set aside nearly £60 billion to pay out for claims for negligence just in England.

the UK government can set aside money by allocating it in budgets, ring-fencing it, or planning it in spending reviews, but the funds remain unspent until the actual payments are made. Do you know how they propose to support this?

The sad reality is that it’s cheaper to settle and these budgets will be set with an eye on previous spending.

With my knowledge of government budgeting, this will likely be a combination of much smaller budgets, often created independently of each other and potentially covering spending on the same singular item within the complex formula for budget setting.

Just because it’s budgeted, there’s no guarantee that it’ll get spent.  It’s also a great opportunity for savings on future budgets, so inflating this years budget (and probably many previous ones too) gives scope to save several percent without cutting actual working funds.
