How can I possibly order the right car for me?

I’m due a new car on 8th June so would be ordering in March unless I wanted to risk a price drop (or rise?) in the second quarter and waited till April.

Now I know that technically I could wait until the 7th June but that’s a different story, I think most of us order at the 3 month mark to allow for build time and delivery?

Given the news that the electric Corsa is now off the scheme after 10 days (?) and given all the comings and going we see on a daily basis reading jamesg posts my dilemma is this…. How can I look at the new prices on January 1st, make up a shortlist and spend the next two months trying to decide which one suits me best sure in the knowledge that it’ll still be available when I go to order?

I think the current system is a joke, I don’t have a problem with  cars being added to the scheme mid quarter but surely they should at least stay on for 3 months or until the end of that quarter?

Do they remove them one week just to bring them back at a different price or is it really the completely incompetent administration of motability that it looks like?

Little bit of both + manufacturers pull cars all the time.

Yes the present system is a joke, there is no way you can plan even a day ahead never mind a quarter, its a lottery.

Very true Brydo. You can book a test drive in a car and before it happens the car gets pulled.

Yes  i can  order  on  31  st    December  .  Do i  go on 31st  or do i wait for new quarter  . Add in the fact  that   not many  of the garages  want to give me a test drive .They  will probably  wake up on the 31st  when  i can actually order ! IT is a crap  system  caps  stop  them taking advantage of  cars that manufactures  want to shift  .  IF  Volvo  put on the D4  XC40   NO=BODY  would  be bothered about  mpg .  The Volvo  might  not be on Tomorrow far  less next  Quarter  anyway  !

The 10 day on the scheme e-Corsa brings up a scenario of people coming to the time they’d usually order & they decide to wait for a suitable car to pop up, perhaps even extending their current lease to allow them to wait for that 10 day window sometime in the next couple of years.

Add this into getting a charger fitted, perhaps having to apply for permission to install for those renting, & it can all look rather sketchy & far off for an electric car, or even a PHEV.

Already had the rabid enviro-warriors swearing at me for driving a diesel in London this year, how long before they start getting really nasty? Will the insurance even cover my journeys into London with they way things are going?

My renewal will be mid July & it’s going to be a mad scramble at the start of April trying to get everything done before ordering & that could be scuppered by this 10 day on the sheme phenomena. We can understand the Zoe 40 coming off the scheme, it was the last few cars in the production run, but a brand new model that is open to order & not ready for delivery yet?

You can “game” the system a little in your situation – there is, technically, nothing stopping you ordering on 31st december, then looking again at Q1 and if there’s something better for you, cancelling your order and re-ordering in Q1. If your wait ends up taking you into Q2 you COULD cancel AGAIN and reorder in Q2. It’s a bit of hassle, and a bit sneaky on the dealers, but it’s hard to be too sympathetic to them with all of the horror stories we hear about people being messed around BY the dealers.  Remember that, until you actually enter your PIN when you collect the car, you are free to walk away at any point.

For my next car I’d love the kia e-niro but for most of 2019 kia have claimed they couldn’t make them because they were unable to source enough batteries… load of rubbish most people thought?

Turns out a memo was released in error by a Spanish dealer showing that they were deliberately holding them back to clear out old stock of their petrol & diesel models because of the new 2020 European emissions regulations.

I think this is part of the problem and “old stock” is being dumped onto motability and why we’re getting things like the not very economical XC40 & Tiguan… both beautiful cars but not very eco friendly. Of course it gives us the chance to drive some lovely cars for 3 years with no real worries about its future trade-in value so not all bad.

I’d expect this turmoil of cars being added and removed at short notice to continue for a while and I can see myself letting my lease end and coming off the scheme (again!… I’ve got access to another old car I can use as a daily driver) and just watching until I see what I really want coming on.

However this lack of stability and continuity is very poor by motability as most of our lives are stressful enough without this adding to it?

I think the E-Corsa, is it, or isn’t it on the scheme is a case of a new model given to Motability to increase sales and put the car out there then the manufacturer sees the sales of none Motability cars going through the roof and more or less telling Motability where they can shove there low profit order’s.

                      BTW, just my thoughts.?

It could get a lot worse on the 31 January

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

ChrisK I’ve said many times that we will be last to get BEVs, especially in the short to medium term. I was really surprised, and delighted, when the e corsa came on the scheme, and I think its too early to jump to conclusions but only time will tell.

So 3 days later and the Corsa-e is back on the scheme…. I cant remember exactly but I’m sure the price has been increased?

Any bets on whether it’ll make it into Q1 or will it be cut again? ?
