CraigWhat’s the best way to haggle with dealers?
In person, phone or email etc.
I’m going to my local hyundai dealer today. They have a £1000 discount if you have a test drive with them. Is it worth asking if they could do a deal based on that for us on motability.
The ap of the car I’m looking at is £449 so not massive but it’s a lot of cash for me.

GordonHi Craig,
I think it’s always worth asking, I think in person would be best unless it’s a long way to go. I’ve ordered a B Class Mercedes and got a flat no from 2 dealers and £1000 off the AP from another which is 160 miles away but well worth the drive as initially everything was done by email so it only means one visit. You’ve nothing to lose by asking and don’t give up with the first dealer you speak to.
February 17, 2020 at 9:01 am #106831hi craig, research first have a look online at motaclarity and the deals thread on here, even if a hyundai dealer in aberdeen has a deal on the model your considering use that as your start point and ask them to match.
a quick look on motaclarity has motorfair in the midlands offering some 0 ap deals and £100 cashback on selected hyundais with free mats and a tank of fuel.
February 17, 2020 at 9:14 am #106834Hi Craig,
Both Gordon and Mitch are talking absolute sense.
The £1000 discount you mention is for buying new. While it means it cannot be directly read across to Motability, it does mean that the dealer is trying to shift cars. So you’re in a good position.
If they do not offer anything, look for Motability deals in other dealers and ask if your closest dealer will match it.
Be prepared to walk away but leave your contact details for in case the dealer reconsiders.
Good luck. ?

CraigI’ve found a dealer in Gloucester that has the ap for the same car at £49 on the website but when I looked at the pdf they have it said £449. I’ve emailed them to see if I get a response.
Either way I’m going to show the Web page to my local dealer.

CraigBionicRusty that’s what I thought about the dealers. A car sold is good for them and keeps them sweet with hyundai and hyundai are happy as they can say “we’ve sold x number of this model so it’s going really well”
February 17, 2020 at 9:30 am #106838Craig, the pdf on the website is just probably not updated. So you’re spot on to show them the £49 deal. I hope it goes well.

chrisCraig,
I agree with the above comments, Found a deal for a VW on this website from a dealership in Oxford and was happy to go there to get the car sorted out (4 hour round trip for me), but thought i’d give my local dealership a chance. Cardiff VW was a flat no (with added grief for not supporting my local dealership).
Then tried Newport VW, they agreed over the phone to match the deal, no proof needed, and emailed confirmation agreeing discount. Currently waiting for it to be built……
February 17, 2020 at 11:44 am #106852That’s what I did Chris, went to local dealer in Bristol who would not give a penny so went to south Oxford and did the deal and a couple of days later had a phone call from the local dealer asking if I was still interested in a VW and I said yes but I’ve already ordered elsewhere.
He wasn’t happy but I said to him I will be back in 3 years so remember back to today when I call. ?

CraigThanks all,
I’ve mailed my local dealer hopefully will hear back from them soon. I’ve told them I’m in a position to order and I know they have stock that could be available in less than 2 weeks as they told me last week.
If not I’ll mail more from the surrounding area.

CraigMy local dealer has just rang and he has said that the dealership only make £59 per vehicle on motability which doesn’t seem right to me so if one of you guys in the know could shed some light on that it would be great.
Thanks in advance.
February 17, 2020 at 1:34 pm #106869Oh I’ve only just stopped laughing. I hope you laughed when he said that as well. That’s the std BS line from all dealers
“Oh it costs us money”, “Oh Motability get the cars at cost” ?
Quite funny really.
Any company that only makes £59 on a £15k (?) car is not in business for long. Hyundai have been in business for quite some time.? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

CraigThat’s what I thought but it was a voicemail so didn’t get the chance to laugh at him.
Just rang the dealer in Gloucester and she checked their Web page whilst I was on the phone. I could hear panic in her voice haha.
Waiting for a call back to tell me it was a typo.
February 17, 2020 at 1:51 pm #106872Keep on at it. Maybe you’ll get lucky. Some flatly refuse and it indicates to good monthly sales for that dealer but you don’t get if you don’t ask. ?

CraigBoth dealers flatly refusing. So back to square one.
Never even got a thanks for pointing out the error on their website either.
February 17, 2020 at 2:45 pm #106882Oh that’s a shame.
So it was an error. Should have been £10 off? ?

February 17, 2020 at 3:18 pm #106887
CraigThey had it £400 cheaper but wouldn’t budge at all.
Oh well their loss.
February 17, 2020 at 3:26 pm #106889God loves a trier eh? ?

GordonKeep trying Craig, my last car / current car is a Nissan Leaf and I actually got £1600 off the AP at the time which was a bargain. The dealership would not be giving you that discount if they were making a huge loss. Often it’s to boost the numbers so that they can obtain future cars at a lower price for the dealership based on volume of sales but as others have said, there is always a deal to be had. There will be a dealership out there who wants your business.
