      hi all,

i reckon i am stuffed but i will ask anyway.

out of the blue my landlord local housing auth have advised rather belatedley that they would be happy for me to have an ev charger installed.

i queried it as we dont have offroad parking and the road is a distance away longer than any cable ive heard of.. she said theres a guy further round the crescent with one fitted and he jst drives up over the grass and charges his car and then parks back on the road.

i need to check this out but find it hard to beleive.

awesome if its true but i do think i saw somewhere mota wont install if no drive.

      any help.

I’m sorry to say that in my experience if you haven’t got off-road parking Motability won’t pay for a charger to be installed and the cable would be too short and you wouldn’t be allowed to trail it across public land/land owned by anyone else. The only reason I’d have an EV is if you have off-road parking so I could charge it at cheap rates, or just for environmental reasons.

If your landlord is willing to put this in writing, stating permission to have a charger installed and permission to drive over the grass, I see no problem other than Ohme wanting to see dropped kerbs, especially if the road is highways owned and not private.

thats the complication @kezo the housing authority own down to the end of my front lawn, then theres a path and a 6m stretch of grass the pavement and another strip of grass which is the councils.

i have written to both about putting in a drive if i pay for it by getting grants etc from service charities or whatever but theres a tree in the way and although they were going to put in parking spaces at one time that disappeared from planning no one seems to be able to join the dots or make a decision.

i reckon the onl way is to get a move to a different bungalow but i cant see them allowing that as bungalows are like hens teeth.

I had to send a second set of photos with my car in the drive as they decided I couldn’t have a charger as I didn’t have a drive.

I’d not be too surprised if it took a great deal of discussion to get them to accept that you can have a charger and, as @kezo suggests, you’d need something from the landlord in writing proving they’re happy but I doubt that’d be enough.

@mitch could you get a veterans grant for a charger?

An electrician would fit one with written permission from the landlord stating you can have a charger fitted and drive over the grass etc, whereas Ohme are a different story.

A drive would be 2 rows of slabs and bolt on kerb ramps, which millions have but Ohme don’t allow and make things complicated for themselves.

Another option would be a charger fitted at bottom of your garden and a protection matt or kerbocharge going across footpath however, this would be a non standard install, as far as Mota concerned but Ohme would charge the earth, probably making just as cheap getting your own done.

Speak with @BigDave I believe he deals with alot of grants for veterans.

i am investigating getting a grant for a driveway/hard standing with the rbl and local agencies the difficulty at the moment is tieing down who owns what and what they are prepared to allow on their territory. not much point in putting hard standing outside the bungalow if i cant get from the road to it. needless to say its like herding cats, the first thng the council said was what does rykneld say and what do the neighbours think. are you sure we own that bit and ooh dont know about the tree.

must admit @kezo i didnt think about sorting the charger myself because a few of the electrics are zero ap so i could manage the charger and i reckon the install would be very basic 2m of cable from the meter etc max.

still ive over a year to tie it all up.

who knows the may even resurect their parking space scheme.
