Has anyone seen the current new car releases? It’s either city cars that can’t go far enough to get out of the city or SUVs.
Much longer term it’s still impossible to tell. As countries start to tax by weight and as new technologies are developed and implemented, batteries will become stronger for less weight. There are already technologies in development that can deliver the same power from half the weight and charge quicker, however, when they come into full production depends on a lot of factors including investment, which would increase if suddenly 50% of a manufacturer’s market started threatening a tax by the kg. Why do you think emissions suddenly drop below a set point? It’s usually because a significant market has set that point and an engineering solution meets that need, not exceeding it beyond minimal necessity.
You can guarantee anything that guarantees a potential loss in market share will be countered, similarly if legislation targets weight, manufacturers will respond with investment in battery as well as chassis materials.
