Lord mucI know mb provide a free membership to bp pulse, with a 10% discount, but it seems, i may not be able to have a charger fitted due to the position and age of the fuse box, cable runs ect. Does this make an ev untenable, as there free chargers at aldi, 7kw. Other chargers are 79p per kw locally. Does the discount make it work, or shall i just stick with oil. Cheers.

Have you come to that conclusion or have you had a survey done in view of fitting a charger?
Can you put a picture up?
As for charging, Aldi wouldn’t be reliable at all give how long it would take to charge an EV and the time limit your alowed to park on their premises.

JamesI’d have someone to look to see if you could have a charger fitted first
if you want an ev then that’s fine but it could work out more expensive over a petrol or diesel
July 31, 2023 at 11:53 pm #228801
JamesI wouldn’t even consider electric if i couldn’t charge at home it’s definitely way to expensive right now i dont really travel far from home so electric was the way forward

Lord mucTo clarify, as i understand, the fusebox is ancient, it has no spare ways, it is also built into a small custom made cabinet in the middle of a room, with no spare space, in which used to be a garage. The tails would need uprating and it only has a 60 amp main fuse. To run a cable to a ev wall box, it would need to run along the skirting to outside as its a solid floors. Without a major revamp, and disruption, i just can’t see it happening.
August 1, 2023 at 9:35 am #228824Sounds like a good opportunity to bring your house electrics up to modern standards which is a desirable thing. Maybe a Govt. grant is available??
As @kezo says, get a proper survey done and then you will have all the information. I know I had to pay extra (£750) for my charger, but the overall cost was subsidised by Motability.
I also agree with @kezo regarding Aldi – you may be subject to the parking regulations even when charging.
Making a BEV work without a home charger is hard work, not impossible, just be mindful of all that it entails.

August 1, 2023 at 10:50 am #228838I don’t think I’d want an EV if I couldn’t have home charging. I’m sure it would ‘work’ but it’s just more hassle in an already stressful life.

Does your CU look like this (rewireable fuses)

Does your DNO cutout looklike this (the cutout is the back thing on the left)

If your fuse box is like the top picture or similar that uses rewirable or cartridge fuses, you are afforded little to no safety in the event of a fault. It is in your own interest of safety to at least try to have a standalone RCD fitted. At the very least if you have rewirable fuses you should be looking at fitting swopable plug in MCB’s available 2nd hand to afford at least overload protection.
Back on to topic of having a EVCP (Home charger) fitted – There is a possibility to split the meter tails (small black box to right of bottom picture) and have a dedicated standalone consumer united fitted to allow you to have an EVCP fitted. You would likely need minor works carried out by the DNO, at least to upgrade the cutout to 100A, which would be FOC. Your main bonding /(earthing) would likely need upgrading to to 10mm, which would be chargeable along with the fittedment of a dedicated consumer unit mention above. Chargeable works would likely work out cheaper if you had a local electrician carry out the works and having a standard EVCP installation through Motability, than paying for a non standard installation with Motability. Thats the basics anyway.
I’m a qualified spark for over 40yrs and qualified EVCP installer.

Lord mucThe other half, thinks its too much work. And then to get the cable from the consumer unit to outside.
I can now see, maybe a new small modern mcbo consumer unit, may fit.
I saw one on screwfix.
August 1, 2023 at 4:30 pm #228865It looks like your home has been rewired at some point given you have modern PVC cables rather than older rubber. Providing there no faults on the system, which is unlikely providing it was rewired correctly, you could swop the outdated Wylex fusebox and fit a modern 18th edition ay 10 way consumer, which would not only provide full protection to the whole house but, also provide a spare way for an home charge point.
The other option would be to split the meter tail using a Henley block and fit an isolator (needed anyway) and a single way garage type consumer unit to supply a a home charger.
The red and black meter tails going from the meter point to the Wylex fuse box would need upgrading to 25mm, same as the brown and blue going from the DNO Cut Out to the meter point.
The two Earth green/yellow cables seem to be 10mm however a lug would need to be fitted where they connect at the bottom of the DNO cut out rather than just spliced as you see now. The Earth cable going through the back of your fixing board should go unlooped to the gas and then incoming water main. If not an earth block can be used , which would then connect to the gas and then run outside at low ground and come in and connect to your waater main.
The DNO may have to upgrade your cut out to 100A depending whats there already. This would be free of charge for an EV installation.
Other than the coiled up mess below your fusebox, the work looks pretty straight forward upgrade looking at the pictures you have provided. However as mentioned before getting a local electrician to do any upgrade work would be cheaper than having a NON standard istallation done by Motability.
As long as your fusebox is on an outside wall it would be easy to drill through the wall and your looking at a day max for the upgrade work and less for the charger install, One day we will all need the work to be done!
P.s the link you provided is only 4 way and has no RCD. You would need at least a 6way plus 1 for EV charger, it looks like you’d get a 12 or 15 way in the space from you pic’s for a split laod CU.

Lord mucKeso. Thank you so much. Thats very kind of you.

@MFillingham wherever he’s hidding would beable to give you charging/running costs!August 1, 2023 at 7:02 pm #228874
SteveHi there I was also apprehensive about getting a charger fitted nevertheless I did the the survey for Ohme which entails you making a little video of your meter position and where you want your charger fitted and upload a sketch after I did this they said they might after charge extra as they would have to put an additional switch in as my electric board and everything was lot older than yours I don’t think you would have a problem I only had to wait a week for them to come and fit it they did put an extra switch in as my fuse box had none spare they were at my house less than an hour and they didn’t charge me extra for the added switch the sparky told me I was his fifth one and he had one more to do that day so my advice is as long as you have off street parking don’t over think it just crack on and don’t forget if you haven’t got a smart meter yet get one booked in I got my charger first and I’m about to get my smart meter fitted only had to wait 3 days for that then I can charge anytime for 10p a kw with OVO it’s definitely not worth the hassle charging any where else than home apart from on the motorway which it does cost a lot but they are fast chargers but I’m not too worried about that with all the savings you make the rest of the time and you only have to charge enough to get you home for a non motability customer there’s a lot to consider especially depreciation but for a motability customer it’s the only way to go

Thank you, it’s sometimes good to be missed. Long term treatment plan but hopefully not feeling horrendous for much more.

August 3, 2023 at 7:41 pm #229008Hi Paul
@kezo what a good memory you have!My installation was years ago but I have only had the car a few months.
From what I remember, you will send off all the relevant forms and photographs. I was required to have a survey due to non-standard installation. I was also required to pay Ohme direct for the extra work.
If I were you Paul, get in touch with Motability if you haven’t already. I seem to remember it went pretty smoothly in the end and I am sure it will for you.
Sorry not to be of any more help like.
