Ev home charging points

We are due to change our car shortly and were thinking about an ev. I understand that motability include a home charging point with the vehicle, but what happens if you move house. It is just that we will be moving house in about 12 months but won’t be able to afford to have the charge point moved.

Another point to consider is myself and other forum members have had to pay for remedial electric work to be done in order for the charger to be installed in the first place. If your electricity supply is not up to the ‘required standard’ for the charger, it is us that end up paying for these works out of our own pocket. Motability only pay for the charger to be installed; they will not pay for these extra expenses.

Also, as I understand, motability will not pay for an e.v chargepoint if you get a hybrid vehicle. They only pay if you get a 100% electric one.

I appreciate my response does not address your initial question, but I just wanted to warn you. I only found out when the e.v man refused to install the charger.

I only mention this as if you are on a tight budget, you may need to save a little extra for this, unless you are lucky enough to live in a very modern house which hopefully will be better equipped for e.v. charging.

Hi We moved after having a charger fitted. I had to have it moved myself which cost ÂŁ60 but I removed the cables myself which was very easy, so the electrician just disconnected the actual wall charger. I could of easily done all of it myself but the council needed proof it had been removed correctly. The expensive bit is reconnecting it. We’ve just got a Peugeot e-208 but didn’t have a charger fitted so just use a secondhand 3 pin charger, very slow but we only do maximum of 50 miles a day.

Happy to answer any more questions you have 🙂

Thank you for all the information, it just goes to show there are always hidden costs to be considered.

Fordmax, I don’t think we will be moving into a modern house. My wife likes period features which, fortunately for me, I have in abundance.

Jeff, I realise you didn’t reconnect your charger but I was wondering if you were given an approximate charge to reconnect. We live in a rural area so our journeys regularly require 100 mile round trips.

I didn’t get an official quote but he said he could do it for ÂŁ150 ish but I didn’t bother looking further than that.

                Hi Guys

I wonder if it would be worth seeing if you could get a grant if you needed remedial electrical  work done to accommodate having the charge fitted. Just a thought as it is an essential item to allow the use of EV’s
