We’ve just had a break in Cornwall, we drove down on Good Friday, being a bank holiday I was dreading it, especially after hearing the RAC warning of armaggedon on the roads. I was a bit anxious about charging on such a busy day.
How wrong I was, I subscribed to Tesla for £8.99 and planned to use Gloucester services, Lifton and Camborne. I had a back up plan for each of them. To cut a long story short, it was an absolute breeze! First stop Gloucester South 8 bays 5 free, next stop Lifton, 16 bays 5 free. We charged twice at Camborne whilst in Cornwall both times only 3 bays of 8 being used. Coming home charged at Lifton 3 of 16 being used and finally Gloucester North 6 of 8 being used.

We started way 100% battery from home traveled around 900 miles and spent £88.21 charging and had 30% battery when we got back.

EV haters are not going to like this, but not only was it a hassle free breeze during Easter week, but we had so much charging choice, we managed to chose the cheaper Tesla option, it actually worked out far cheaper than filling an ICE car.

I’m an EV driver ( and total convert) and I was interested in your post @batfastard ( great name). I suppose for us EV users plugging in on longer journeys reminds us of the blimmin’ hassle of petrol station visits that we’ve all but forgotten about with 99% home charging.

I get 7p per kWh overnight rate by the way on octopus and a recent trip to Glastonbury involving a hotel stay I charged overnight on a 20 kw charger for £15 ( main car park behind the George and Pilgrims)

That’s a more encouraging figure to me.

I find it both interesting and amusing how many EV drivers talk about the “hassle” or “faff” of filing up at petrol stations.

I have a PHEV and find having to charge it (even though I can do so at home) to be far more “hassle” or “faff than just a 5 minute (max) visit to a petrol station once every 3 weeks or so that I had with my previous ICE cars!

The subscription does not open up Tesla only sites to other EV’s & it has a minimum 1 month contract length. If you buy an annual subscription you pay less, £90, rather than the standard £8.99 a month, saving 16%. Reports vary, but around 50 sites are open to all EV’s in the UK.

Thanks, if the subscription gave you full access that’d be worth it ( especially for the odd month when you knew you were going away etc) but as it’s only access to a reduced price it isn’t (for me). I’ve got the Tesla app and to date have never found any availability on the long routes I tend to do.
