RachelHi,
just wondering (and hoping) that someone may be able to help me with this form? I’ve just received it today and don’t know what to answer.
I’ve currently got the following adaptations : Automatic transmission, left foot accelerator and a steering ball.
There is a helpline to call, which I have done but nobody is answering. Can any of you lovely people help me please?
Thanks in advance, Rachel?

Hi Rachel
Not a lot of help from me I’m afraid because the only one of those codes I have is code 20 Modified Braking System along with a couple of other codes so I know nothing about code 30 changes.
Looking at the 3 replacement codes it seems they are just clarifying the adaptions and maybe code 30 wasn’t enough information as its been discontinued.
The steering ball comes under Code 40 and is one I have too.
I see your problem because it could be more than one of those codes but my guess is you should have code 40 for the ball and code 25 for accelerator.
Your driving licence is for automatics so that comes under everyday codes as its not a disabled persons thing.
Sorry I can’t help more than that but needs to be checked with DVLA because these things get checked when you renew your car as I have trouble with my code 20 that I’ve never had that adaption on my cars but gets pulled 50% of the time when renewing my car.
When I’ve had the problems with my code 40 I’ve sorted it by going through Motability who have a direct link to DVLA and wonder if they could put you through to someone down there quicker.
Good luck.

Rachel<p style=”text-align: left;”>Thank you for your help and advice @ChrisK, it’s good to know that it’s not just me who finds this letter a tad confusing! I’d have thought that if DVLA are changing the codes, that they’d know which one it needs to change to? I don’t want to put the wrong ones and then get into trouble if I get pulled over.</p>
Thanks for the suggesting I phone Motability about this, I will call them in the morning as trying to get through to DVLA is a nightmare???♀️?.Cheers ??
April 5, 2022 at 6:38 pm #182074Hi Rachel, I found a list of codes below. Code 30 is for licences issued before 28th November 2016 and is a combined code for braking and accelerator systems, which I would say code 32 is the most applicable. But you do not mention adaptions to the braking system and only the accelerator in which case code 25 is the most applicable. Hope this helps a little, sorry can’t help anymore.

D BlakeI realise this is an old Post but thought I would give it a try…
Having read the previous Posts I notice there is no Code specifically for ‘Hand controls’ (accelerator, brake or clutch (for manual transmission vehicles)). Does this mean they would be a combination of Codes – 15/20/25 and/or 114?
Also, under Codes 32 & 33 what do others think a ‘service brake’ is? In over 40 years of driving I have NEVER heard this term used in the UK!!! It’s either a ‘hand brake’ (Parking brake in the US) or a ‘foot brake’ – regardless of HOW it is operated (including electrically-operated ‘hand brakes’ on more recent vehicles)! TIA
April 15, 2023 at 11:01 am #219232Can’t help a lot with the DVLA codes and the code you have mentioned, code 25, is the only one I have on my licence and as noted above its a code I’ve never had to use.
Having had a hire car with push pull brake and accelerator this is what code 32 and maybe code 33 refers to though what I seen in the hire car did not control the clutch or steering.
I was in your position back in 2008 when I first became disabled and didn’t know Adam from Eve when it came to adaptions, hence the unnecessary code 25 on my license, but came across people who gave me some helpful and free guidance, link below is to the same folk though they changed their name but assume what they do is still the same. Find a centre near you and give them a visit.

It will be a combined code/s, rather than individual codes imo.
Code 33 covers code 32 with the addition of steering systems (Tiller system for exmple)
Code 32 combines codes 20 and 25 – Code 33 combines codes 20, 25 and 40.
A service break system refers to the primary breaking (foot brake) which operates seperately from the parking break. (the combined codes refer to a modified foot break)
If in doubt cover yourar$e with code 114 or use indvidual modification codes.
Hope this helps 🙂

D BlakeThanks for the (very helpful) replies so far.
My main reason for asking was, I want to ‘cover myself’ for being able to use Hand Controls (push/pull brake/accelerator, auto transmission so no need for clutch controls) in the event I should ever need to use a ‘hire car’, e.g. Motability vehicle out of action.
I did speak to my local adaptions specialist about it, but he warned me that if I were to add the code(s) for ‘Hand Controls’ (hence my original question) to my licence, DVLA might insist that I ONLY use Hand Controls from now on!!! This would be a backwards step as I currently only use a Left Foot Accelerator, but that is a far more complicated adaption to fit – e.g. to a hire car – than a simple Push/Pull Brake/Accelerator.
Going by the earlier replies, Code 32 would appear to cover ‘Push/Pull Brake/Accelerator systems’, but then what’s the difference between ‘Combined’ & ‘Modified’ (Codes 20 & 25) systems???
What a minefield!!! Having been disabled all my life and a driver for over 40 years, I wonder if writing to the DVLA will actually result in ‘opening a can of worms’?!
April 21, 2023 at 11:57 am #219685I would put what you currently need and listen to what you were told by the adaptions centre you spoke with and add when/if ever required. The fact the DVLA might insist you to use hand controls as specified on your license, theres also the matter if you ever got pulled over by the police, would they expect them?
If your vehicle was ever off the road for sometime, Motability also offer a free taxi service you can call on when you need. Not the best but, at least you can still get out and about and not be stuck in.

D BlakeA good case for ‘let sleeping dogs lie’, I think.

April 24, 2023 at 4:41 am #219934Sorry to be late to the party.
I would not mention the ball, I doubt that you really need it if you have two good arms.
Therefore I would select code 25.
