Downsized Wheels – Adaption?

      Hi,

Has anyone had smaller wheels fitted as an adaption?

I need a very smooth ride and have found 205/55/16 to be about my acceptable limit on Golf sized cars.  Trouble is all the midrange models with the interior spec I want (auto wipers, climate, etc) seem to come on 17s now.

Obviously it’s an easy job to swap wheels between a basic model and midrange model, just not sure if they’d allow it?

      Thanks

@SmoothOperator I think it best that you ask Motability about this. It would be classed as adaption to the original cars spec. Motability I fear would not allow this, nor would RSAM ins-co.

Ok, thanks Joss.  I’ll see what they say.

To update this…Motability don’t seem to know if they’d allow it.

In answer to your original query surrounding the wheels and changing them for smaller ones, this would be something which your local dealership should be able to advise you more on. As they are the Manufacturing Specialists, they will be able to suggest which vehicles, if any, they can adapt for you in this way.

I’m also interested in this, my Ateca with the 19″ alloys is terrible in any amount of snow, I spoke to a friend yeserday who has the Skoda Karoq with the same size, his is terrible as well.

@Phaedra the solution to that is winter tyres!

Which I would have to pay for, not cheap!  🙂

I was always against big 18 inch wheels etc because of back problems etc and hard ride but most are linked to sports suspension so that’s one of the reasons I had a Toyota CHR big nice alloys 18 inch but comfort suspension amazing ride

@Wigmam I asked if fitting smaller wheels was an allowed/acceptable adaption on the Motability scheme.  Stating the same scenario as in this thread, simply using the wheels from a base model on a midrange one.

I think Motability were first concerned, from a technical position, whether it was a viable option. Hence the referral to the dealer.  I would be more direct and say – if it’s approved by a dealer, would Motability permit the change to the specification?  (I presume this would be a new car order.)
