Dealer ordered the wrong car

Called in at the dealership on Saturday to check on the progress of my order, which I was expecting to arrive within the next few weeks,  when I was taken aside by the Motability salesmen.

“Hello Mr Bonzodog.  I need to have a word.”

Apparently, due to a simple data entry into the manufacturer’s system, the wrong car has been ordered by the dealer.  Not a simple, minor error but the difference between an estate (requested) and a hatch.

All my paperwork is 100% correct.  What Motability have is correct.  Just what the manufacturer had was wrong.

This only came to light following a discrepancy between what the dealer was expecting to arrive in the next few weeks and what the manufacturer was going to deliver.

The delay is for at least three months with the new scheduled delivery not until December.

      What are my options?

I have spoken to Motability who basically said that it is for the dealer to sort out which doesn’t really help.

        Sadly, you have two options…

Wait for the correct car (and see if the dealership can offer something for your inconvenience) or cancel and look elsewhere.

        Frustrating, but that’s it sorry

Your options are very simple and straightforward. Either wait for the correct vehicle to be delivered, or cancel the order & find a different make/model from a different manufacturer… although there might also be a wait for that one too.

I had a similar problem in December. I had left the scheme but had decided to rejoin and ordered a Mazda CX5 auto in November with deliver mid December. Traded my car in against the AP.
Arrived to collect my car, did the paperwork and signed over my personal car. Dealer went to bring the car round and came back to me  saying the car was manual. Checked order and found he had ticked the wrong box!
He couldn’t have been more apologetic or helpful. Cancelled the order, ordered a replacement car arriving late January, took care of all the paperwork with Motability and gave us a demonstrator car until the new one arrived.

All depends on the service levels of the dealer.

I feared that was going to be the answer.  Terry Pratchett had a lovely expression for situations like this: an embuggeration.

Not a Vauxhall Astra by any chance?

Someone in the Motability group i’m in ordered the Estate and the Hatch version turned up instead.

No …  I am deliberately being vague but it wasn’t a Vauxhall.

I don’t believe the dealer, they sound untrustworthy. I don’t see how the correct paperwork can be produced but not the right car. Order are place via computers and if they can’t use one of those correctly, what chance of them doing anything else right?

Also, when did the dealer know about this error and when were they going to tell you about it?

I would be suspicious of being hoodwinked and consider cancelling the order with them to go elsewhere. Although I appreciate that isn’t always practicable.

So what are you going to do @Bonzodog?
