Crashed in first month ?

      Hello,

I’m 16 and had a motability car (full licence) for around a month now but was involved in a crash on a country lane (went over pothole/bump and damaged drivers side). I’ve been given a rental car to allow me to get to Six Form while its being repaired but will I have to pay any fines/fees? I’m worried I may lose the car because of it being so soon or is that not the case?

      Thanks

First of all – try not to worry too much T. These things happen and sometimes in life, sh*t happens!

You won’t get a fine or penalty – but as far as I can recall, you’ll probably have to pay your policy excess – whatever that is for a young driver.

Hope your car is fixed soon. As I say, these things happen T. All the best.

Like everyone else this happens. You may have an excess to pay but it be ok. Stick in with your studies and dont fret this stuff. Your study is more important than a bit if metal

The important thing is no one was hurt and on top it’s a learning experience and it’ll help make you a better driver in the long run.

Don’t worry esp as it was just you involved no one’s going to be very interested just pay the excess what they charge 16 year olds and try not to ruminate too much on it.

Try to take away from it what could I have done better to avoid it and make that the outcome

All the best it takes real courage to learn to drive pass the test and drive on the roads at your age!

                The poster claims “age 16”.

When did Motability ‘bend’ the rules of law – which is still age 17 before a theory test can be taken, let alone a driving test.?

Or does T not know his age – or his name.?

(We had what used to be called education in my day.)

                  age to drive in uk:

You can start driving a car when you’re 17. You can drive a car when you are 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

                    Apologies.

I wasn’t aware that the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment was something that could be applied for.

Nor was I aware that driving a car at 16 was allowed for anyone under any circumstances.

If you receive a higher rate mobility allowance, you can learn to drive from the age of 16.

You can apply for your provisional licence three months before your sixteenth birthday – just apply online at gov.uk(opens in a new window) or get a D1 application form from your local Post Office.

You can learn to drive in your Scheme car or WAV Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle as long as:

                      You have a provisional licence
You’re listed as a driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance
You’re accompanied by a driver who is over 21 and has had their licence for at least three years – they should be named on your Certificate of Motor Insurance too

Well I’ve learned something today as well. I had no idea that 16 year olds in receipt of higher rate PIP were allowed to drive. Have to say that I’m quite surprised that this is deemed to be in the interest of the safety of all road users.

Glos Guy and others, I and others  were entitled to drive an Three Wheeled Blue Invacar on the road at 16 in the early 70’s, so it is nothing new and I can only assume that the whole philosophy is that as a  16 year old disabled adults cannot simply jump on and off public transport, it allows us disabled to apply for jobs and participate in life in general.                                                                 Unfortunately much as I now know that fact, I didn’t know it at the time and did not apply for my Invacar until I had just reached 17 and it took another 8 month for delivery of my Invacar.

so i can answer this cause it happened to me in first week too

It took fix auto like 2 months to fit my car in for repair so i had a courtesy from Enterprise, when the car is ready to be repaired the garage will ring you and you have to pay the excess which is £100, then the repair is started, when its ready they’ll let u know, u can pick the car up and drop the courtesy car off the same day

Nothing extra needs to be paid
