This pandemic is a disaster for the world, but here in the UK England is being disproportionately punished. As the weeks go by and the cases fall it is likely the three smaller nations will be in a position to exit the lockdown but could this work while England is still in it?

If you think about it logically it will probably happen, the UK can’t afford to have 9,000,000+ people sitting at home when the majority of them could be working and paying tax and starting to move the economy.

as said previously ,i too live on the border and we still get people wanting to visit north wales during the current lockdown if individual countries ease restrictions will we not see even more trying to escape england

Assuming there is no vaccine, to  know when to exit lockdown we need accurate figures on how many people have the virus and are infectious, how many people have had the virus and are now immune and how many have not had the virus. If enough people have had the virus and are immune then they pose no threat to anybody and lockdown could end. Ironically, England may be suffering most now but equally well it may have many more immune people then the other constituante countries and reach release sooner.

The major challenge is getting the accurate figures needed. As the ONS report has made clear today.

bfoandc I think it highly unlikely that England would be free from the lockdown first but the question would similarly apply, could any part of the UK open before the others and I think the answer is yes. I agree that testing is very important but unfortunately the government has been very slow in rolling out testing in large enough numbers to play a significant part in the decision making.

I think its likely, if things continue as they are, that Scotland, Wales and Northern Island will be released from lockdown first with potentially areas of England being released there after. Some areas might see young people, with restrictions, free to go back to work but restrurants, bars and cafe’s will be closed for months to come.

We could of course hear of successful treatments coming from trials of existing medication being completed all over the world, that, even without a vaccine, would change everything.
