I’ve got a leaf 30kw and the general opinion on EV forums is that this is quite a good realistic test to show what they can do.

Now before the comments about how someone can do 700 miles in their diesel come in I’ll just say that your bladder won’t manage 700 miles and it’d be dangerous to drive that distance in one go, and as for “where is all the electricity going to come from?” well that can be generated in several different ways (wind, solar, wave etc) unlike the question you should be asking “when will the oil run out?”… sooner than you’d think?

Anyway as for driving these long distances, when you stop for a break you plug in and get a bit of a recharge, by the time you’ve had a P, bought a sooky sweet & had a look around wondering where all the other travellers are going you car will be ready for another 100+ miles.

On Tuesday I left Glasgow and went to Glencoe, then onto Ft William. From there I cut across country to Dalwhinnie and Pitlochry before heading home, 265 miles roughly. On Wednesday I went to Inveraray, Lochgilphead and back then to Ibrox at night, about 240 miles in total.

I’m doing 20k a year and it would be more if going to work and having to spend time with the wife didn’t get in the way… ??

And I’m getting the equivalent of 186mpg minimum… it can go a lot higher if you include the occasional free charge ??

Rhodgie great info thanks for that.

Ibrox? Why would you go there? Lol.

The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.
Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.

Rhodgie, you make your case for your driving pattern well enough, but other people have other needs.  A few years back we had to  drive to Geneva in a hurry (family emergency) and drove there from London non-stop except for toilet breaks in 10 hours (two drivers). We then had to go from there to Turin, similar situation, and return home from there (one refuelling stop).  That was in a diesel Golf.  Just to say it would have been impossible in an EV as sold today.

Wigwam I’ve heard that sort of argument before…. ever heard of Hertz ? ever heard of borrowing a car from a family member, close friend, trusted neighbour… not to mention planes, trains or even a bus? Basically your dissing all EVs because of one incident many years ago, and also your wrong because a Tesla with access to its supercharger network could while you were at the toilet?

And really how many people need to drive an ICE because they might have to suddenly travel across Europe… what about those who dont drive, how would they manage? I’ve no doubt your emergency was real enough but it’s a pretty weak one to use as a reason for not getting an EV… next it’ll be how dangerous they are because they’re so quiet ?

I’ll admit an EV may not be perfect for every one and every job at the moment but again I’ll ask the question “when will the oil run out?” and if anybody on this forum says “I don’t care, I’ll be dead by then” then shame on you and remember that when some fit, healthy, wealthy government members say the same about you… “I’m not poor or disabled, why should I do anything to help them when they do nothing for me?”

              Passionate rant over ??❤

I’m not dissing anything Rhodgie. Sorry for you if you think that.

I’m so tired of people saying that you just leave your car to charge for an hour or two while you go shopping, or sightseeing, or have a nice little Lunch somewhere.

As well as having MS I also have Anterolysthesis, Facet Joint Disease, a spinal cyst (possibly 2 now – it’s under investigation), and a fractured and compacted coccyx with associated radicular pain along the spinal cord.  I can’t lift my wheelchair out of the boot, and even if I could I can’t self-propel myself further than about 20 feet across a perfectly flat and level floor (e.g. within the house or along Hospital corridors) because I can’t bend and lift or risk twisting my spine (why sports seats are vital for me as they keep my spine straight and stop sideways movement).  DH always has to take time off work to take me to Hospital appointments, and now even GP and Dental appointments, just in case I can’t park by right by the door.  He often has to dump me off by the door with the ‘chair and then go park my car somewhere else, walk back, and push me through the Hossie.  And then do the same in reverse going home afterwards.  I hate that he has to do that.

When I’m out by myself (which I love) and have to venture out of my car I have to walk, and I have to finish everything in under 10 minutes or my spine packs up and I’m pretty much bed-bound for the next 3 days to a month.  Filling the car with petrol I can do, if it’s Pay at the Pump (which is why I only use 2 garages).  A tank of petrol gives me a range of over 400 miles and, so far, I’ve never had to drive further than 330 miles.  But I do

Because the base of my spine is smashed up I can’t sit on a bench or at a picnic table, or in a cafe unless the seats are armchairs (which I can’t know in advance and can’t waste my limited energy hoofing up and down trying to find out).  If I have to wait UP T AN HOUR for my car to recharge a little bit then I will just have to sit in the car while it charges.

So every trip I take in a fully electric car will be limited by the battery range, and at the moment the average range isn’t enough for me.

Same point here Georgie and the fact not one of today’s EV’s never mind the poor selection available on the scheme don’t have a boot that can fit any of my mobility equipment and retain the rear seats and most don’t have a flat floor for loading on a ramp or the height to clear, until they start to make bigger versions of EV’s then the range argument for me is moot.

We have to hope (and it’s not an unreasonable hope) that there are a few big SUV’s available to us by the time ICE vehicles become obsolete as Motability vehicles.  In the next 10 years every car manufacturer will have to Evolve or Die, and competition will play a huge role in cost and range = choice.

The thing is, (as we all know) Motab. make money selling ex-Motab. vehicles, which helps defray the AP on their new vehicles.   At some point, I’d guess c. 2030, there will no longer be a Market for second-hand ICE vehicles as a 5 year lifespan for a second hand car seems reasonable.  After 2030 the demand for second habd ICE vehicles will crash, the Market will dry up and that source of income will disappear.  THEN things will get really interesting regarding AP’s for EVs.

I hope this is making some kind of sense, by the way – I’m on morphine today and it’s really starting to blow up my noodle.  I’m in the ‘Grinning like a Loon’ stage at the moment.  I think making dinner later is going to be . . . quite interesting . . .

                        😀

Perfect sense, I’m on Morphine every day so don’t get that spacey wacey feeling any more.

Vinalspin so you’re saying it’s the size and shape of the boot that’s the issue for you? What do you drive just now?

Georgie you can’t walk far so you’re not going to use destination chargers while off on a wander around a shopping centre, they’re for people who want to travel a bit further afield in an EV and get a charge while doing something else, you could always find one in a scenic location (Kings Lodge Hotel, Glencoe?) and enjoy the views while charging but mostly you’d plug in at home (if possible but not available for everyone?) drive to wherever you needed to go and then plug in again when back home. If on a long journey you’d plug in at a Rapid charger for 30 minutes and could sit in the car until it’s done… are you saying you do journeys of 330 miles at a time, do you do that in one go cause that’d be a 6+ hour journey without a break.
