it all depends on your personal circumstances and choice of car.
occasionally there are deals to be had on pcp etc for cars that are not available on motability.
very occasionally there are deals that beat motability on individual models, at one time there was a special offer on an auto jeep renegade that was cheaper than motability but it was only one model in the range and not the best one. but if that model gave you what you needed it was a bargain.
the thing to remember with pcp is that they tend to charge for the slightest blemish at the end of lease and mileage charges arent low.
motability offers something thats worth a lot, peace of mind one payment and you just put fuel in and so long as you look after it at the end of 3 years you get £650. no searching for insurance deals, servicing etc all taken care of.
at the end of the day its your choice.

SaintsmanAs someone kicked off the scheme by Capita and who has a PCP I can wholeheartedly say that Motability is far better and cheaper than any PCP.
My monthly costs are £280 for the car, £50 insurance, £30 extended warranty. Then there’s been servicing costs, new tyres, brake pads etc. Then on top of all that I’ll probably have to pay for a couple of scuffed alloys and any paintwork that they deem is not fair wear and tear when I hand the car back.
My PCP is not over until April next year, as I have made more than enough payments and can Voluntarily Terminate any time my local BMW dealership will take the car back with no additional costs if I get a new BMW on Motability. It’s a great deal,as from experience with my daughter’s car they can charge a fair old bit at the end. My heart is set on a plugin but if I’m going to have to pay upwards of £500 at the end of my PCP I’ll just have to get another BMW, it’s not a bad choice ?

SaintsmanI forgot about mileage, cheap PCP deals are usually based around 8000 miles, I do around 18,000 miles a year. Day to day I only cover a round trip of a mile to the shops (hence the plugin) but I do at least three trips to Europe with one trip a minimum of 3000 miles. This adds another cost as I have to pay extra for my green card and European breakdown cover, in all the years with Motability they never charged a penny for this cover, although it does say in the T & C’s that they can.

Paul LoveWhen I was considering both, Motability won at a canter. Around £100 a month cheaper on a 20000 miles a year basis, and that’s before contract end adjustments mentioned by others. My comparison was around 12 months ago, so unless PCH market has changed considerably due to Covid, I would stick with Motability.

CarlGenerally, if you only need a small basic car and do 10k miles or less, pcp deals are half the cost of mobility….and obviously some really great deals on the market at the moment with the glut of cars sitting in warehouses.
If your needs are such that you need a bigger suv or a more luxurious car maker and do more than 10k miles a year then mobility is always a winner. Not forgetting the insurance and servicing is also included.
June 21, 2020 at 12:20 pm #115758I’ve done both, luckily when I lost my award moving from DLA to PIP I was in a position to buy something, then the last of the Yeti’s were being offered at a good price, 3 months up front and a large contribution from Skoda then £200 a month for 3yrs including maintenance.
Luckily I got my award back last December, I can’t find anything at the moment with my needs that matches Motability so (assuming I can still get the Tiguan) I’m coming back to Motability.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

bfoandcAlso a hidden advantage of Motability is that if your award is reduced or removed then Motability will end the lease whereas if you use PCP or lease you will still be financially committed, even if your income has halved. Generally the cheaper PCP deals tend to be for longer terms as well. Not something I thought about under DLA but my experiences with PIP have made me much more aware of how things can change!
June 21, 2020 at 1:15 pm #115769How much is peace of mind worth each month?
June 21, 2020 at 3:11 pm #115779June 21, 2020 at 3:42 pm #115781JS
No the cost of peace of mind is the difference in price between Motability and obtaining the same car elsewhere. Sometimes a small amount extra but often a saving!!!

RhodgieNon of my “non mobility” cars has been brand new on PCP as I don’t think it is good value, instead I’ve spent up to a max £11k buying a car that’s a couple of years old. I’ve then been able to trade that in as and when I wanted to. Given all the additional costs to running your own car it’s still worked out cheaper although there is more work (and stress?) in doing this than the simplicity and ease of having a mobility car.
My thinking behind this is that I can get a car that’s not available on the scheme… currently my other car is a saab convertible and my wife drives a Mercedes C250 coupe…. both of these could be parked up and abandoned after 3 years having cost the same as my mobility car, anything their worth as a trade in is money in my pocket.
I only have a motability car now because when I turned 50 I fancied driving a brand new car for a bit (a sort of Birthday treat?) and also I wanted to drive an electric car so got a Leaf just to commute to work and back… turns out it’s so nice to drive it’s my main means of transport now
