As title says can you fit a towbar to a motability vehicle later on in its lease?

Can all vehicles have a towbar fitted?

I usually see two options on the list when buying new. A towbar prep (cheap) and the full towbar (expensive). I never ordered either option.

All answered here on Motabilitys page, The tow bar must be fitted by your dealership or a VAT registered fitter, and you will be responsible for any fitting costs. You must notify our Scheme insurers RSA Motability.

I have had tow bars fitted to my last 4 vehicles.

The first three times it was an after-market fit.

The last one was a factory fit.

The first three, I rang Motability and asked if it was okay.  One each car, I specified OEM control boxes rather than relay/bypass kits.  In sort that meant I was able to get the car’s on board computer reprogrammed.  Sounds a faff but things like trailer stability programs and reversing sensor systems etc are altered automatically.  Third party kits don’t always do that.

The current car was a factory fit option.  At £550 it wasn’t cheap, but then when I priced an aftermarket kit, the extra £100 seemed worth.  I didn’t need to notify Motability or RSAM as it was factory equipment but I did out of courtesy.  Plus, as a factory fit item, the full 3 years warranty of the car applies rather than the 1 year that normally comes with an aftermarket unit.

Some manufacturers take the mickey with towbar prices – Volvo charge over £1000 on the XC40, Ford charge £900 on the Mondeo.  Aftermarket prices may be considerably cheaper.  Dealerships may offer a towbar service but more often than not it will be a third party installer and the dealer takes a slice.
