PhiljbApologies if it’s already been posted but I just read a piece in the times saying sales have been so strong BMW now plan to keep them in production, but say there won’t be a new model.

Phil I read there would be no new models or updates which is a pity as I love the look of the car.
The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.
Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.February 16, 2020 at 12:48 pm #106721I believe they will be on sale until 2024.
February 16, 2020 at 1:15 pm #106725It’s a great car to drive but I wish they would bring it out with a more traditional bodyshell i.e. 1 series as it would be more practical.
Definitely marmite looks.
February 16, 2020 at 1:23 pm #106727It is Elliot but I think it looks great and would love to see it updated on the future.

February 16, 2020 at 2:28 pm #106739I suspect the decision to not continue with i3 per se is just part of repositioning EVs to become the core offer, rather than being a slightly quirky side project.
The next 1 series is bound to be developed with the aim of being EV first.
February 16, 2020 at 3:37 pm #106742the ap came down last quarter so by the time my new lease is up it could well be affordable it was a close run thing this time so it could be my new car in 3 yrs.

FootlooseI really like the look of the i3s especially in black or white+black with blue accents and the range would seem enough for me as my work commute totals around 10 miles daily so unless traveling too far afield then range anxiety shouldn’t be an issue and with all my vehicles I tend to go for a vehicles looks and as much as the i3s looks are divisive I believe it’s a great vehicle and Ian if your reading can you give an update please??

PeterThe i3 is missing lots of tech that is in other EV’s available on the scheme. BMW want £550 for the heat pump system which is standard on lots of others, as just one example.

FootlooseHi Peter
what is the heat pump system and what other tech is missing as it would help those of us considering this vehicle before deciding?

IanI am reading!
7000 miles on the clock now changed my electric tariff to Octopus Go because it allows me to charge cheaply overnight 5p kw vs std 13.4p. Car is set up to charge automatically on cheap electricity. Hope to benefit from solar when sun starts to make an appearance.
Heat pump not sure what the advantage would be to me.
Started playing with the split screen on the large display. It has a lovely way of showing different apps ie weather and album cover on the large screen or sat nav big map and then road signs for the next few roads.
I’m still seeing real savings for fuel but I very occasionally use rapid chargers when needs must, 35p kilowatts do remind me what I used to spend on fuel……
Spotify is a personal favourite as is reading bbc news at the traffic lights…..finally the performance is amazing I love driving it! Prefer it to my previous BMW 535d…….

PhiljbIt is a shame it won’t get a facelift but I guess by the time BMW bring out their 25 new electric and hybrid models the styling and tech won’t sit with the new image, battery weight and range should be much improved by then too.
Again if and when it is pulled from production there could be more bargain Ap’s for some.
February 16, 2020 at 11:39 pm #106808The heat pump is for heating in winter on longer journeys instead of the resistance driven heater, it means that you use about 1/4 of the power for heating the cabin. Many EVs have heat pumps as they are much more efficient, but models sold in countries with warmer climates just get the simpler cheaper heater/aircon instead. Living in Scotland you’d likely benefit more from the heat pump than you would living in the far SE of England, it’s a balance you need to work out for the BMW i3, how much range do you want to sacrifice to the heater…
No need for it on short journeys.
No need for it in the summer.
Marginal need for it in parts of the UK, but you’d want it anywhere in Europe that has the colder winters.

PeterI would have to disagree with Gothitjulie. I would estimate that the heat pump would help retain range for around the six months of the year that I would prefer heating on in the car, whether on long or short journeys. Using a chunk of battery capacity to provide this doesn’t make sense to me, especially when other EV’s provide this heat pump system as standard. Then again, I feel the cold; part of my condition.
Other tech missing. I believe these would include:
Blind spot detection
ACC
Heads Up display
Wireless Charging
Chargeable Apple Carplay and Android Auto fitment (this was chargeable, not sure if still is).
Matrix LED lights
I feel that the current i3 would be a better proposition if BMW updated the tech to compete with the latest crop of EV’s from the likes of Peugeot, Vauxhall and DS.
Just my 2p worth 🙂

PhiljbA facelift model could easily add all the above tech, but if they have heavily invested in these new models to come shortly and one is likely to be i3 size, there may be no point in doing so.

PeterI completely agree. I collect a DS 3 E-Tense on 2nd March. I was keen on the i3 initially but couldn’t reconcile its AP without these features compared to the latest EV’s with. If they had both had the same tech and AP my choice would have been different.
