So you would think that car salespeople would treat Motability customers with more respect ?
June 5, 2024 at 6:11 pm #279241So you would think that car salespeople would treat Motability customers with more respect ?
Unfortunately whilst we may be the biggest Manufacturer customer, we are the least profitable to the dealer as they get a set bonus per car which is lower a than private sale and I believe that a sale does not count towards targets.
We are reliant on building a relationship with the dealer and the Motability name behind us.
June 5, 2024 at 6:17 pm #279243I’ve been to many dealerships only two have treated motability as if it’s some sort of big blessing for us and we should be grateful as if all of us wouldn’t swap good health for our pip
ive mentioned this before but was talking to a Hyundai dealer about the new Santa Fe but he said how it’ll never come on the scheme (not that I asked) and how he’s shocked that their “premium” models are on atm (assuming he meant ioniq 5/6)
anyway when asking him about how much % motability sales make up in his dealership, he replied over 50% so I well it seems you’re the lucky one that motabilitys a thing

Motability sales do count towards dealer targets.
A Hyundai dealer who was offering £3,000 AP contribution said that they’ll recover the money they’re using towards the AP contributions as these additional Motability sales will help them reach the targets & therefore unlock massive bonuses.

I believe the dealers get around £300 per Motability car, but most dealers are willing to offer at least £500 AP contributions, if not more, because they make the money back if they reach targets.
June 5, 2024 at 8:02 pm #279254I have to say that my experience at two different Audi dealerships over the last year (due to an accident write off) is at odds to what a lot of people are saying. At both dealerships we were treated like royalty through the whole process write up to the car being wrapped on the day of collection and the sales manager attending the handover. So a huge thank you to Exeter and Hereford Audi (two different companies).
June 7, 2024 at 8:29 am #279368This is why I tell people try to order roughly at the end of the month, it used to be quaters, but now its monthly… basically I dealer will fall head over feet for a motability customer if it makes up their monthly numbers, why they only might make a set amount from you, the fact your sale could mean the difference between hitting a target and not.. for a dealer that means the difference between a 5% discount and a 8% discount on the following months orders… so they would obviously make money from you as 3% extra off what they pay for all of the following months orders equates to a lot more than the set fee..
This is why you see some dealers offering cash back etc.
June 7, 2024 at 3:30 pm #279428I had a great relationship with an Hyundai dealer for over a decade before coming on the scheme. Hyundai make part of their money from warranty repairs and servicing on new cars. Although the latter is not a lot of money if owners buy three year service packages.
If a Hyundai dealer refuses a warranty claim, it’s not because they’re being unfair, they’d love to have the work despite it being fixed price according to the issue. However, they have to convince the manufacturer that it is indeed an issue.
From memory, they made very little on the sale of a car, even less if the price was haggled down.

June 9, 2024 at 10:05 pm #279675If you dont mind me asking which dealer it is, I’m thinking of ordering a Hyundai and if this dealer is closer to me (London area), guess I can try my luck.
June 19, 2024 at 10:20 pm #282450“Explosive” growth in car sales – yet it seems like nothing is being done about the accessibility limitations that comes with EV ownership.
June 20, 2024 at 3:57 pm #282500I am so relieved that I am no longer the only person correcting the hogwash that people get told by so many dealers that “they only get a handling fee” for Motability sales! As has been mentioned by several others, whilst it is true that the only direct payment from Motability is a handling fee (although they get additional fees for dealing with returned cars), Motability orders count towards their targets and therefore help to generate bonuses and discount percentages, all of which can add up to a very tidy sum. This is why some dealers will offer discounts off APs that are in excess of the handling fee and yet they still make a handsome profit.
As for service from dealers, I have found it to vary enormously. Heritage VW in both Bristol and Gloucester were awful. Marshall Volkswagen in Didcot were better, but still not great. Dick Lovett BMW in Bristol have been absolutely brilliant, but that may be because I know the salesperson having bought cars there privately. Berkeley Vale Hyundai in Thornbury (near Bristol) have been excellent with two private new car purchases that I’ve made there for one of my daughters and were initially helpful with a Motability enquiry, but seem to have forgotten that they were meant to get back to me about a test drive!
June 20, 2024 at 5:11 pm #282509My son is getting horrendous treatment from Marshall BMW in Grimsby. They’ve totally messed up his order and are washing their hands of it.
June 20, 2024 at 5:22 pm #282512I went in and walked straight out of there. Went to Volvo and they were great so ordered straight away with them.
Hartwells in the past were amazing to deal with. Even threw in a few extras.I like sitting outside RAF bases all day pretending to be a photogramapher
June 20, 2024 at 5:34 pm #282513I have often had said to me by volvo ,mercedes ( oh no it won’t be on motabilityscheme ,just the basic cheeper models will get onto that source, am I right in thinking that skoda refused motability customers access to new model kodiac ,saying only previouse older stock is available on motability at present, I was looking ,they contacted me twice ,I said oh no I’m not interested in older design model, and stopped looking to skoda ,I liked enyak but theres no hibred model just plugin.
June 20, 2024 at 8:39 pm #282538Over some 20 odd years on mobility. If when looking for a replacement car. If you come right out and inform the sales person you are a motability customer.
1: sorry but our motability guy is on holiday.
2: it’s our motability guys day off.
3: Our motability guy is at another dealer location.
Then all other sales persons find something else to do. Than talking to myself and wife.
Better not to mention motability.

Many dealers are the same when it comes to company car drivers – if not worse, as they know that the order won’t even go to them! When a car sales person greets you with “are you a private or fleet customer” that’s code for “because I’m only interested in you if you’re a private buyer and I frankly can’t be arsed to waste my time on you if you are a fleet customer”. I take that as a big red flag and they’d have to go some thereafter to convince me that I’d want to place the order with them.
I always say “ my wife is entitled to a Motability car but we are keeping our options open and may buy privately”. That seems to throw them and I tend to get treated as a private customer thereafter. I also call them out on any BS about them “only getting a handling fee for Motability orders” and when they know that I know how it all works it goes one of two ways. Either they treat me as an intelligent adult and with respect, or they decide that they hate me and can’t wait to see the back of me 😂
June 20, 2024 at 10:03 pm #282553Now their may be some that will say ( well I’ve had exellent care at ford or mercedes etc ) BUT I agree car dealerships are not interested , much, in motability customers ,motability should , ( remind ) dealerships ( ,hey our customers are customers treat them with respect ) ,volvo where worst I’ve ever dealt with, and I agree do not mention you are motability until you have to , motability customers are responsible for huge amount new car sales, I’m hopeing my kia experiance keeps as good as it started.
June 20, 2024 at 10:12 pm #282554June 21, 2024 at 8:06 am #282578I’ll pick my new Honda up on Monday and what are debacle from start to finish first of all the Motability specialist wasn’t there because of some religious holiday they didn’t know back till the day before? Because I told you give me a car without some of the specifications in the card I was shown. I played my face and got the one all the paperwork was wrong Which took three hours to sort out I’m finally with the car was handed over. I don’t know about 7 miles and the time inflation system might come on came on. So straight back to the dealer again, tried to set up the Car Wi-Fi to be sold by the car the Telematics hadn’t been switched on which I requested The Car plus the spare wheel Locking studs Were missing So back to the dealer again to have the telematics switched on and the The Missing wheel studs to-be replaced when they finally fixed everything although was really interested in was making sure that when Honda gets in contact with me via email that I give them an Excellence review what a joke
