Basic car interior, is it for you?

There have been many comments about how basic/bland the interior of the Tesla cars are, and i agree. No matter how much you pay for a car you spend far more time inside it than looking at it from the outside. Tesla are very basic, if you were to compare it to a house it would be regarded as minimalist. If thats for you then great but i like to feel as if the car inside is plush, comfortable and high end. This of course will be different for everybody but to me the inside is more important than the outside, although i wouldnt buy an ugly car just to get an interior that i like.

i would much prefer a plusher interior instead of all the stupid annoying techy things they put in and on cars.

proper buttons and knobs instead of touchy feely slidey things and let me drive the bloody car instead of some micro chip putting on the brakes because it thinks a large leaf falling off a tree is going to damage us.

To me, Tesla’s are function over form. I really don’t like the outside nor the inside. BUT their tech is just amazing. If I had the money, I would look towards BMW.

My first car, Morrie Minor, had one speedo dial, four switches, a lever for trafficators. Never did me any harm..!

I guess change is coming, (don’t mean complete success yet), it’s just nice to go kicking and screaming towards it for me..

I do read a lot of Brydo posts, lots of info, however there’s always stragglers I’m one I’ve never even owned a diesel, as it gave me a bad feeling with the big government push, petrol everything for me..

I will dread the day charger installation and the whole process..

On this occasion I’m not talking about EVs in particular lol I just used Tesla as an example. I was referring to bland interiors in general.

I remember many years ago buying a Nissan stanza and after driving it home from the dealership I felt six inches taller. It was the first plush interior I ever had and I felt like a toff ?. Since then the interior has always been a make or break for me and my cars ?

For many, myself included, the interior is one of the most important aspects of a car, it is where we spend most of our time. A combination of comfortable seats and well laid out controls are key factors combined with good quality finishes and easy to use sat nav and climate control in particular. Faced with a traditional interior of the Kona and the minimalist ID.3, that was a key factor in my decision making. For many, they simply wish to turn a dial to alter the temperature, not scroll through menu’s, potentially distracting them.

Cheap interior is something that really puts me off a car!

The VW ID3 is a good example…roughly Golf sized, yet with the interior of an Up!

Totally agree, I just couldn’t get past what I have to say was a cheap interior. Don’t get me wrong, the Kona’s is nothing to write home about but felt more solid and upmarket. Strange thing is the ID.4 interior is basically the same as the ID.3. Apparently this is something that VW want to, and probably need to, address. The Skoda Enyaq, which shares the same interior components has a more upmarket look.

The ambience of my car’s interior is important to me. I have a lot of time on my hands so I drive out regularly to nice places, where I can sit for as long as I like in comfort and watch the world go by. A comfortable heated seat with massage function, a soothing or stimulating hifi depending on mood and location is a must have. An interior which is pleasing to the eye completes a therapeutic experience.

My car is my “home away from home” so it has to be a pleasant place to be.

We weren’t hot on the ID3 interior either, one of the biggest reasons why we went with a Golf instead.

That said: the interior can be a decent place to be. We didn’t sit in an ID4, but we did sit in the Skoda Enyaq – same platform, similar interior. The Enyaq was a nice place to be. Still rather.. bare, but in a good way. Minimalistic, clean, rather nice.

That all said, after looking at comparisons, the main reason for the “interior feel” of the ID cars is the centre infotainment thing on too big a dashboard. They all have the same thing, a screen with the buttons attached at the bottom – and it looks cheap and nasty – and more importantly, it doesn’t look integrated. It looks like they built the car, and then stuck that screen on top of the dash – it feels like an old tomtom stuck to a vent, if that makes sense.

Interior is important. We sat in a Tesla, and it was just awful. Minimalistic in a cheap way, panel gaps that you can stick your finger into, etc – really rather not impressed. They’re built shoddy, and the technology isn’t market leading either, they were just bolder in adapting it, accepting the inevitable problems that come with it. Lots of it is simply “hype”, gobbled up and parroted by Musk zealots – much like Hyperloop, intercontinental Starship etc. They’re of course advanced, but they don’t do anything other modern EVs couldn’t do – just that other manufacturers decided that the tech isn’t quite there yet, and they’ve been proven right. “Self driving” technology is almost there, but not quite.

The Kona.. Well, we did like it better than the ID3, but it still fell short of what we’d consider “quality”. So did the new Tucson, as a sidenote – while in videos we were very impressed by the floating centre console etc, when we drove to Hyundai to sit in one, we were greeted by a grey centre console – grey from finger prints over the massive gloss pianoblack screen/controls. Looked “okay” after we wiped it down, but seriously.. meh.

We ordered a car now, but we’ll still go and have a sit in the new 308 (again, on video a rather nice interior), as well as the new Sportage (same). Equally the DS4, which has a pleasant interior (and was a choice until the first reviews came out describing how it drives – which isn’t quite what we’re looking for).

I agree entirely with POPS, in fact i’d like to empathise on one particular point. The ambience matters. You can have the nicest quality interior, it can still feel “off” and not quite comfortable. On the other hand, for example the Mercedes GLA, which we thought has an absolutely awful interior (with the screens stuck to the top of the dashboard behind the wheel) judging by pictures was instantly cosy/homely when we got in. Part of that was the interior light i assume, as well as the “hand rest” thing in the centre (gear lever is behind the steering wheel in the GLA, so you only get a leather topped.. thingy in the centre just to rest your hand on).

A veces, menos es màs.  But not the cars interior!
