My wife and I are trying to come to a decision about coming back on to the scheme and what car to go for. Having had three utterly brilliant Volvo estates through Motability (and bought the last one off them which we still run) we’d really love another, but there’s now zero chance of getting one. Sadly the smaller Volvos available on the list simply don’t have enough luggage space for the kit we unfortunately have to carry with us. We also need/want to go electric, the reduced running costs would be very welcome as we do 20k miles a year.

So far we’ve ruled out several cars, including a BMW i4 (too difficult for my wife to get into), VW ID5 (nice panoramic roof but uninspiring otherwise), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (stunning car and great value, if only it was a hatch!) and several others for various reasons.

We’ve ended up with a shortlist of three cars – the Kia EV6, the obvious Skoda Enyaq, and a car that doesn’t seem to be mentioned on here much, the Audi Q4. Our impressions of the Audi were that it felt lovely to sit in, oozed quality and had a dashboard designed with a bit of thought, without an over-reliance on a huge touchscreen that looks like it has just been plonked on the dash as an afterthought, like so many electric cars seem to have. Online reviews tend to mark down the Q4 for its lack of range and equipment, but they appear to be out of date as they mostly refer to older versions of the car. The updated 45 model now also available on the list has 282bhp and a quoted range of 329 miles which as good as or better than any of its competitors. It also has heated leather seats, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise and an electric tailgate. The £3999 AP isn’t the cheapest, but its on a par or cheaper than the Kia EV6. The luggage space isn’t quite as capacious as the Enyaq, but it’s not exactly cramped and has more litres than our Volvo estate.

So are we missing something? What are the downsides of this car? Have we overlooked a reason why it doesn’t seem to be a popular choice on this forum? Comments from owners especially welcome.

Was given a black edition for the day last Saturday and it was even better than expected. Great looks, the cabin was classy, and it drives really well.

I’m going to hold off till the 2nd quarter to see if the black edition makes it on, but if not, I think I’ll still be putting an order in for an S-Line with wheel upgrade.

The Q4 E-Tron uses the same MEB platform as the ID4 & 5 and the Enyaq so the ride & range should be very similar, it’s just a different body shell plonked on the same chassis! What you get interior wise & the amount of tech you get is brand specific but, basically they are the same car!

I’ve test drove both the Enyaq and the Q4 now.  The Enyaq was initially my first choice, but with waiting times being so long, I decided to test drive the Audi, which is a superior product (in my opinion). This price isn’t too different if you factor in 21″ alloys on the Enyaq Sportline, which I would have wanted.

I’m taking nothing away from The Enyaq, I still really like it, and it’s a much more interesting car than VW’s rather bland effort, but having lived with the Q4 for the day. I personally think it’s quite a distance ahead of the competition.

Did you have a 45 or 40? I was in Audi the other day looking at these praying the Black Ed comes on as it looked really nice in the showroom.

It was a 45. Yeah, the Black Edition is a stunner. They also had a Navarro blue S-Line with a wheel upgrade (£150 option) which will be my pick if the Black Ed doesn’t come onto the scheme in the 2nd quarter.

Audi have confirmed today that the 360 display no longer has cameras. Basically just 360 parking sensors.

such a shame a high spec manufacturer can’t meet in my opinion basic spec.

pretty poor show. cant remember what it was but might have been adaptive cruise was an extra too. in this day i’d say that should be as standard, especially on anything above basic spec.

im sadly running short of cars on my short list lol

Adaptive cruise is standard now on the 45 and above. It is poor show, that £4.5k pack is pretty rubbish now. My shortlist is now just 2 cars unless we want to sell a kidney ?

For a premium brand even the Sport is pretty well specced IMHO.  It’s been a while since I bought a premium brand but then pretty much everything was extra including the radio!  They said they wanted to give the purchaser the choice.

So it’s certainly better than it used to be ?

Tbf, the 45 S-Line is a £55,000 car. You couldn’t touch one for 4.5k deposit and what you’d pay monthly on Motability with insurance and servicing included. Even a private lease would see you pay something in the region of 5k deposit and around £600/700 per month without insurance.

I think some folk forget how lucky we are to have brands like Audi and BMW on the scheme.

think it was the electric seat actually when i think more.. had electric lumbar but manual seat, which is odd. was the quattro version i think. its still a decent deal i suppose but in a high class car you dont want to be adding packs

Sorry, extremely bad day yesterday. Main Audi uk webpage under motability. I’ve screenshotted it but I can’t figure out how to attach.

For example the sport 45 e trim is £4499 from £3999. Quattro £4749 , the sport back £4499
