My wife and I are trying to come to a decision about coming back on to the scheme and what car to go for. Having had three utterly brilliant Volvo estates through Motability (and bought the last one off them which we still run) we’d really love another, but there’s now zero chance of getting one. Sadly the smaller Volvos available on the list simply don’t have enough luggage space for the kit we unfortunately have to carry with us. We also need/want to go electric, the reduced running costs would be very welcome as we do 20k miles a year.

So far we’ve ruled out several cars, including a BMW i4 (too difficult for my wife to get into), VW ID5 (nice panoramic roof but uninspiring otherwise), Hyundai Ioniq 6 (stunning car and great value, if only it was a hatch!) and several others for various reasons.

We’ve ended up with a shortlist of three cars – the Kia EV6, the obvious Skoda Enyaq, and a car that doesn’t seem to be mentioned on here much, the Audi Q4. Our impressions of the Audi were that it felt lovely to sit in, oozed quality and had a dashboard designed with a bit of thought, without an over-reliance on a huge touchscreen that looks like it has just been plonked on the dash as an afterthought, like so many electric cars seem to have. Online reviews tend to mark down the Q4 for its lack of range and equipment, but they appear to be out of date as they mostly refer to older versions of the car. The updated 45 model now also available on the list has 282bhp and a quoted range of 329 miles which as good as or better than any of its competitors. It also has heated leather seats, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise and an electric tailgate. The £3999 AP isn’t the cheapest, but its on a par or cheaper than the Kia EV6. The luggage space isn’t quite as capacious as the Enyaq, but it’s not exactly cramped and has more litres than our Volvo estate.

So are we missing something? What are the downsides of this car? Have we overlooked a reason why it doesn’t seem to be a popular choice on this forum? Comments from owners especially welcome.

It may depend on if you’re ordering or buying from stock. I think the 40 was a 60:40 split.

Try another dealer or at least another sales person at your dealer.

@Ant3 I too like the q4, for many of the reasons stated, including an interior that looks like a car and not a phone shop’s ipad and iphone stuck on or buried in a hobbit hole!

how did you get the electrical adjustable seats? I couldn’t find an option at all for this ? Which model did you order?

It’s only the lumbar support that is electric, the rest of the seats are manual.

Went to check one out today, was really impressed with the leg room at the back, we’ve got a q3 atm and it’s cramped at the back with two kids. The model we saw was a black edition, would be great if that came on the scheme as it gets a better steering wheel and looks better (in my opinion) I wouldn’t be surprised if it did come up in April. We’re not in a rush to order but yeah think I prefer the q4 over the ix1, just a shame you can’t get the sunroof without paying for a £4000 pack

Test drove the Q4 in November 2023, really liked the car, put off at the time by the sport trim level, mainly down to the wheels and more basic specification. Fast forward to February 2024 and I have now taken the plunge, ordered a Q4 45 Sline, together with park assist plus, graphite wheels and the function pack which adds a variable boot floor, making it easier to load things into the car. I had also been considering the BMW IX1 Msport with tech pack plus, eventually dismissing due to its lower range to that of the Q4, also preferring the looks of the Q4. (Previous 2 cars being X1’s maybe time for a change)

Contact motability and ask. Mine expires 10th March and I’ve not had an extension yet from DWP but my new car is ordered and confirmed as motability have had to change the rules because of the huge DWP backlogs.

Don’t understand what contacting Motability will help do if I lose my PIP?

They may allow you to order the car without having the 1 year minimum award they usually require.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

It’s handing over nearly 5k to potentially lose my pip award that’s the concern, regardless if its refunded .

Does anyone have any info on build times for Q4 or Q4 Sportback please? On chat via the Audi website, they have told me 40 weeks, subject to what specification I require. Seems a long time even by current standards!

That seems excessive! We ordered ours at the beginning of February and was told 4-5 months. That changed fairly quickly to late March/April.

For anyone who added the park assist with 360 display, the cars are being built with no 360 cameras now, it’s a schematic 360 display. For us that is a deal breaker change and makes the car unsuitable. I’ve asked our dealer to confirm this (because sometimes everything you read ins’t true!), if it is true we will have to cancel and go back to searching. Disappointed is an understatement. I wish VW would just hurry up with the electric Tiguan. Hope April 1st brings more SUV offerings.
