Fine idea but EV batteries have a finite life. Who’s going to compensate me for shortening that life feeding the national grid. So my neighbour can boil his kettle?
January 12, 2023 at 12:19 pm #205813You will be classified as an undesirable. Oscarmax, and will be surcharged for non-compliance with the programme. In reality if you’re not being billed for energy you can’t be taxed on it.
I have always been undesirable. At present Octopus Go is for EV/PHEV customers only 12 pence 4 hours off peak and 42 pence normal rate, but only pay 4.1 pence for outgoing export, I can see they may be able to police this tariff, however like me several Octopus Go customer have solar panels and batteries, Octopus are happy because they get cheap energy and 4.1 being exported plus the battery storage banks balances their grid.
You then have ECO7 for those on giving 7 hour off peak at 18 pence and 42 pence normal rate open to anyone.
You then have Octopus Agile which is a variable tariff again open to anyone.
I actual generate considerably more electric energy than including charging up the PHEV, for about 9 months of the year the PHEV does need to charge from the grid
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

I might have ?
or I could charge up over night for 50 pence

January 12, 2023 at 12:26 pm #205821So how is that going to work; (a) I have solar panels (b) I have a solar battery storage (c) I have several choice of tariffs with Octopus energy, Octopus Go, ECO7 and Agile ?
Having several choice of providers tariffs doesn’t matter here and now, but it will probably in the near future, when BEV’s become the main car of choice and the grid starts to hit high demand., A surcharge or higher unit price on charging will apply – part of the point of a smart charge point. Remember we have been offered a sweetner to dip are toes in EV’s – The government have removed part of that sweetner and will soon remove another taxing EV’s eith by VED or the smart charger. How long before these tariffs are removed, or should I say when EV’s become more main streem.
You have what might be an interesting solution, with solar and battery storage, that will probably work or soften the impact, but I’d assume bigger battery storage and sunny days will be required. Even so, if all the sweetners are removed your current system will go some way when EVs become the norm.

Oscarmax If you have a barn and fill it with batteries you will definately be taxed for non compliance – even your local authority will want a piece of the cake, whils’t charging you business rates at the same time lol

I might have 2 barns?

You will have to bill your neghbours every time they use the kettle ?
January 13, 2023 at 4:18 pm #206015I said it before and say it again, we get ripped in the uk by energy companies and ofgem the fake for brown paper envelope regulator, just regulate their own wages, our feed ins are awfal in the uk, In the states, the energy companies have to pay you per kw what they charge you, in canada you bank it (so if you put 50kw over the summer, they own you 50kw before they can start charging you) yet in uk we dont even get 25% of the amount they charge us.
OFGEM (Our For GAS Energy Money) in other words they do more for the energy companies than they do the people…

A government regulatory body, set up to protect consmer but, does the opposite.
